Steam reveal

This might be interesting to some:

http://www.tomshardware.com/news/steam-box-steamos-nvidia-valve,24405.html

I don't quite know what to make of it! I guess that the Steam Boxes coming out will come with various degrees of NVidia graphics, seeing as they've helped develop the system.

that article says

"The final piece of the Valve puzzle will be revealed on Friday. We already know what that will be, and it's not Source 2 as the supposed Valve employee suggested."

I think it will be a controller similar to the one that Mad Catz will be bringing out with their Android Console 'M.O.J.O" later this year which will have a mouse mode but perhaps also some additional user definable keys.

It's not Source 2? Well that would mean it's fairly safe to assume it's not L4D3 or HL3, in which case I really could not GAF.

SteamOS is pretty cool though.

If anyone would be kind enough to add me as a friend i would be really grateful. I just have no one to add. I need 5 friends hahahaha ;-(

my id is bancho81

My htpc q9550 /5850 will this be enough to run the steam os?

If they've shacked up with nVidia for the Linux compatibility and AMD have been left out in the cold then no, you'll be stuffed, it would probably run games like a bag of spanners and you'd pretty much only be making use of the streaming function.

I think this is a bad idea. Firstly because it most likely will never work out (lack of game support) and secondly because it goes against the whole 'PC gaming' ideology. PC gaming isn't meant to be a pick up and play solution, but a more sophisticated experience, requiring some degree of setup and tinkering from the user for an end result that is (potentially) far superior than what you get from a console. A bit like most things in life really.

Well to your first point the support of games is growing all the time, with Nvidia and AMDs increasing support of gaming on Linux, and Valve have announced their streaming tech which will hopefully bridge the gap with existing Windows titles...

And as for the ideology - what about the pre-built "Gaming PCs" sold in various places (OcUK's own systems for example) which are exactly a pick up and play solution? ;) There are plenty of people that want to game on the PC but know very little about how to setup and tinker with a system, and they get along just fine - it's just that they end up eventually replacing the whole thing with another off-the-shelf system rather than upgrading it

I'll be surprised if the last announcement is a game.

If it were i'd imagine it to be like an orange box 2 type thing, since Ricochet 2 and L4D3 are apparently being developed already, throw in HL3 or a new IP and ship it out (Doubt they will do a TF3).

I'd put more faith into an input device, but personally I'd love to see some new games from Valve.

Nah I think it's a good idea! but better idea is a ADDON for Ubunutu and have Steambuntu boxes.

As I said in my stupid thread a good wan wad be a daddy machine and repeaters. Daddy is front n back end if needed but the low enders can feed off em. Maybe have deals on were you can for xx time have 2+ licences for a game (meaning your) mate CAN play carry a BAG OFF a train simulator while you do too.

Be happy with that if it works! Got a gtx670 in the main rig.

So did anybody else pick up the Nvidia driver update last night which specifically adds "Streaming to SHIELD devices"? Seems likely that this might be paving the way for how it will work with SteamOS

steam makes moding easy though anyway and takes half the tinkering away
