Hi guys I'm after a cheap 4x4 for £1000 max

Was thinking Rav4 or Suzuki Jimny/Samurai

Im just going to park it up until it snows but maybe at the weekend if I have nothing to do take it off roading (just lightly)

Any other suggestions??

Very few will be worth buying for a grand - you might just get a half decent Jimny - they're very good off road. Crap on the road, but they're handy for dump runs and general crap.

It is bottom end of the market, but the discoverys are very cheap to maintain and quite reliable with a bulletproof engine.

Danny isn't shy with a spanner which also helps.

Loads of Discoverys for the money out there.

They bloody are not :p They also rot for fun. A Discovery is something you buy because you want one, and yes they are good at what they do, but it isn't a practical, reliable, cheap off-roader.

I might look at discos, people always want them so when ive had enough of it will be easy to shift

It is only the sills you really have to worry about. Cheap fix.

The parts are dirt cheap. I see them as a cheap, practical, reliable, off-roader.

I'd go for a ford explorer. My dad ran one for over 100k without anything but basic servicing and it was utterly reliable. You don't get the rust issues you'll have with a disco and the 4.0 V6 makes them a lot nicer to drive.

They're not the best handling cars in the world but for £1000 you can't really complain. Ours was really comfortable as well

I believe they are actually comically expensive to run, especially ones you will find at the 1k mark....!

15 year old Jeep Cherokee for me at this price. Proper off road ability, lots of toys and lots of reliable old fashioned grunt that doesn't mind abuse. 4.0l petrol would be the one to go for.

As an outside option how about a Jeep Cherokee? They're reasonably comfortable, if a bit noisy, and my neighbours had one for years seemingly without problems but reading that maybe they were just lucky.

Alternatively the older (even more) boxy Isuzu Trooper might be worth a look.

Discos are ridiculously expensive to maintain! They rot like nothing else and whilst the engine is decent everything bolted into it breaks for fun.

For a grand buy something jap, if you want a true 4x4 then you might struggle to get something relatively modern but if a soft roader will do then the likes of a crv should be easily attainable.

I was thinking about a smaller car guys, like them girly ones in my first post

basic and simple but still with ability
