These temps are too high, right?

I'm a total noob at OC'ing so this attempt was the result of nothing more than going in to my motherboards BIOS and selecting its default 4.6ghz overclock profile.

I'm guessing that 90c is too high, especially when you consider that it reached those temps after only 2 minutes of running Prime95 (SmallFFT). My cooler - a Gelid Tranquillo rev.2 - isn't the best (nor the worst) but i do have two intake and 2 exhaust case fans so overall cooling shouldn't be too awful.

Are there any noob friendly things i can try to tame the temperatures?

Thanks

Is the cooler seated properly?

pretty sure 1.4V is way too much for 4.6Ghz, from memory my 2500K managed 4.5Ghz on 1.275V, maybe try dropping the volts to around 1.3v and see if it makes a difference.

What CPU fan do you have, stock?

I replace the stock with a 120mm Akasa Apache.

Yeah i'm fairly certain its seated properly I'll check again when i my gfx card arrives and i'll have a good dust clean out.

Went in to the bios and selected the 4.4ghz profile and put CPU Voltage to 1.325v (its normally set to 'Auto'). It bluescreened within seconds of running Prime.

Went back and selected the 4.2ghz profile this time leaving voltage to Auto.

Better temps but again this was only after a couple of minutes of Prime so take it for what its worth.

Ditch prime tbh, Use the computer as you normally would. If it's stable, wahey! If not, either bump the volts a little or drop the multi a little ;)

Yeah i have no intention of running prime for 24 hours or anything. As long it all runs stable whilst gaming and not too hot then i'll be happy.

You might wanna forget the auto overclock profiles and follow a good OC guide instead from scratch. That way you'll use the right voltage, and just enough of it, not too much. If you don't exceed 1.4V you can pretty much safely play with the settings.

Use a combination of two-three games for stability testing, such as BF3, and something based on cryengine 3.

If that's stable after 30min of playing, you can prime or aida64 to check your "worst case" temps.. it should also be stable at that point.

The auto OC profiles just up your voltage too much and make your OC toasty as heck. You also might wanna check your case's airflow.
