Royal Mail to be floated on stock exchange

Sent my application and cheque for £2k worth of shares today. The process closes next Tuesday so get your applications sorted now!

I'm confident the Government will not get value for money selling off Royal Mail, never has done before when selling an asset so why should it now?

I did a similar thing with BP Shares during the oil spill

Took out a loan, said it was for a new car, put it all on BP shares lol

mmmmmm, decisions, decisions

I suspect this will be massively over-subscribed, because of the dividend yield and "reliability" of the business... in the medium term anyway. Millions of savers are struggling, and this is as close to a "safe bet" as you can get in these uncertain times (even if the share price falls back a bit after an initial pop).

It'll be interesting to see what proportion of the application amounts get accepted.

I thought you had to buy sell, buy to do the isa thing in this case?
Apparently not. I've used Selftrade's instructions to (maybe) buy via the Share ISA I have with them.

I'm not sure why I bother with the ISA though. If I'm ever in a position to draw more than 10k out of there in any one year (rather than the 10p which looks far more likely) I'll be gloriously happy to pay my tax! :->

I may be wrong but as I understand it, if you have bought shares outside of an ISA you can bring them inside by selling them and buying them back again inside your ISA account. If you open an ISA account with a broker you can buy your shares within that ISA and get the tax benefits.

I have been caught off guard and my ISA is currently in use so i'm going to just buy some shares with my normal trading account.

Is there any reason why I can't apply for shares on their website AND through my broker? (half and half)

I've never bought shares before.

Just looking at the royal mail website - when do they take the payment for the amount of shares you have applied for?

Having a look at my bank it looks like they have taken it already, by which i mean its been deducted from my "Available Balance". I presume it gets refunded if i'm unsuccessful.

For reference i applied yesterday.

I think if you use the website it's immediately but they refund money if you can't get the number of shares you ask for
