i5 750 to AMD 8350 worth it?

Since playing the BF4 Beta and the arrival of next gen consoles I feel its time for me to upgrade from my 1st gen i5 750. I was playing BF4 Beta and notices all cores running at 98%.

Now I would love to get an i7 4770K but it's over my budget of £250 for an upgrade. So after doing some research I'm leaning towards the AMD 8350. This is the package I'm thinking of getting:

AMD 8350
Asus M5A99X PRO R2.0

Total £270

Will this give me a significant boost in gaming over my i5 750?

i have the i5 760 and i did some research and turns out the out i5's still beat the fx83xx CPU's in single core speed

but for new games im not sure, im getting a 4770k after xmas as i know that its deffo a upgrade and not a side step

can you not wait a bit longer and get a 4770k?

Most people say to get a 8320 and overclock that, although you need a decent cooler!
Wait till the actual proper game is out then see how it runs and also some benchmark comparisons should be out as well

Ah yes waiting, the band of PC enthusiasts lol I could but the way my life is right now I couldn't warrant spending over £250+ on an upgrade. An i7 4770k route will cost my almost £400.

I only use my PC for gaming so I'm not fussed about single core performance

When about 99/100 games aren't heavily threaded, single core performance is important.....

It's not worth it at all to jump to an fx8350 from an i5 750.

Wait till after the beta, BF4 is one of the very few games the FX8350 will be better than your i5, but in the other 99 games? It won't be.

Is your CPU overclocked?

ahh i see, could you not stretch to a i5 4670K?

do you play any older games? if so the AMD CPU will suffer greatly

the mobo comes with a CPU cooler FREE and you can use your current RAM

£297.78+shipping
can you stretch to that?

I could stratch to that but that CPU has only 4 threads, I want an 8 thread or 8 core CPU.

I agree but isn't single core performance of an FX8350 better than my i5 750 which is overclocked to 3.7Ghz.

For an FX83XX to get the same core for core performance as your 3.7GHZ, you're looking at like 4.5GHZ.

But 3.7GHZ for an i5 750? They can go upto 4.2GHZ.

In heavy threaded situations, (Encoding) the FX83 will be ahead, a decent amount.

But for strictly gaming, it is simply not worth the upgrade.

You'd be far better going for a second hand i7 3770K set up (But you may have an aversion to going second hand)

Feel free to change to an FX8320, but in gaming you're not going to get the type of gain you're looking for.

I have no fear about my 4670K in future games.

A 4770K and Z87 board comes to 350 quid (I don't particularly feel the i7 is worth 240 quid, but I don't set the prices)

I've seen the i7 3770K go for around £150 second hand and then I could get a brand new motherboard for around £100 :)

Hmmm... second hand CPU I just don't feel comfortable doing that. Also it's an Ivybridge shouldn't I be aiming at Haswell?

I am not particularly impressed in my upgrade from a i5 760 @4.2Ghz to a 4670k @4.5Ghz. Some days i just wish i didn't bother but at least i got a really good price for my cpu and mobo.

Haswell and Ivy aren't much different to be honest.

I'd aim at Haswell, but unless you're willing to pay the 240 quid for the i7, then you don't have many options.

When people say single thead performace is better on intel cpu's how much is that performance when converted to fps in games? Are we talking 0-5fps? 10+fps? If this performance only converts to a small fps gain then better single threade performance isn't really that important is it? Granted a lot of it is down to drivers and the gpu you use with the cpu.

Good question, I can't find any benchmarks that can prove this though

The 4670k has 4 threads like my i5 750 so it won't be that much of a jump, or is there a bigger picture?

Depends on the games entirely.

Don't forget, any gaming difference between an i5 750 and an i5 4670K are purely down to the increase in core for core performance.

Well, mine's clocked at 4.75GHZ, it's about 25% faster clock for clock (It's actually probably more)

So that works out a crap ton faster than an i5 750, but then it depends on the games and GPU set up, that might translate to almost nothing in real terms.

I'd just stick with the i5 750, just overclock it more.

Intels next refresh looks so-so, but AMD's FX83 replacement could certainly be worth a look at.

No chance of finding an old i7 860 for cheap? Keep your current platform, while gaining the extra threads.

OK I might try overclocking it more, I just used the Ai tweaker in the BIOS which automatically overclocked to 3.7Ghz.

Just thought what if I got a second hand i7 860?

+1. The 8320 will save you £30 to put toward a cooler but as los says check out the game on release before judging.

The 4770k is £240 alone and should not be directly compared to a £100-150 CPU.
