Which 7970?

1. Rangerjr1 don't you see that you could have just as easily have got a reference card that wouldn't even do 1050mhz stable? how would that have changed your opinion of the Matrix? 7970 were clocked officially at 925mhz reference speed for a reason.

2. You might have got lucky with your reference card but it's irresponsible to recommend everyone else buy one just assuming they'll have the same luck you did.

1. I was completely aware, but since the Matrix advertise it as being the best ocer i went for it. And GUESS WHAT: Now im angry that i paid more for a card that gave me nothing as promised. Reference cards have the same chance of getting gold clocks as matrix do. Matrix has nothing to offer, other than leds, a decent cooler and a backplate.

2. I dont recommend the ref card because i think it'll "Clock better" ! I tell them to skip the matrix so they dont have to suffer the same disappointment as i did after dumping 400 pounds on this card (I know its not priced 400 now.)

And MAYBE, Just MAYBE. the Matrix is the better choice now because of the price. But dont you DARE go around say it will clock better than any other card, because its JUST NOT TRUE. And if the OP is watercooling? I stand by my claim, get a ref card and block it.

You've been thinking this is about how well the card overclocks? All this time??? Really? Are you FOR REAL? That is NOT what its about!

my 7970 Matrix did 1250/1750 with 10c ambients with quick 3dmark benches. My reference card with reference cooler does 1270-1300/1880 depending on the bench and 1380/1880 with a block. It absolutely trumps the Matrix, and at the time, the ref was cheaper than the Matrix.

7. With all these BELLS AND WHISTLES you'd think it would clock better than any other 7970 because that is what it IMPLIES on its website. But it doesnt, it straight out lies to people who buy it. That may or may not matter now because its now priced accordingly.

*Ahem*

I dont hate the card because it clocked bad. Read my previous post. I paid PREMIUM price for it and got less.

Yes, you got a card that didn't clock as well you'd hoped.

To me - it just looks like you had a poor card

The one I had when they first came out did 1345/1900 and didn't break 70 degrees

I agree that Gpu Tweak sucks

For the price - the card is a no brainer for anyone wanting a air cooled 7970

You cant buy a non reference card and complain that specialized blocks are harder to come by and also more expensive.

The fact that it has better power management and higher quality components allow it to achieve higher OC but as its been said plenty of times in this thread, nothing can guarantee overclocks and if the GPU hits a wall before it makes full use of the better power management, then that is hardly the fault of Asus, since they do not guarantee it, because they cant.

Also i am sorry to tell you Rangerjr, but Kevin Bacon was in footloose.

All of the above.

They also use higher quality components and overspecced power stages etc so the card should theoretically last longer, reference cards will use pretty much the minimum required to keep costs down. I bet the Matrix has less chance of coil whine which affects a lot of 7970 too.

If the Matrix is so much better than the ref card, why is it priced like this then? (LOWER than a ref card)

If it is priced lower than a reference card, why are you still complaining about it?

Your reasons all suggest that you don't think it is worth the premium over other 7970s. The premium is gone.

@OP get matrix, for the reasons already mentioned

To get rid of stock of a specific line of which they have a lot of because the new cards are in, and also to give a good price to loyal OCuk customers and forum members who continuously check the daily deals.
