OK now had 2 viruses, first the ransomware one that requires payment to remove and then one that stopped my browser opening.

I use Microsoft windows essentials, so think its time to get a new one, paid is fine.

So which one is best, doesn't slow my machine down and is good at stopping the java based Trojans, ransomware and malware browser hijacker style viruses, any recommendations thanks.

I personally use a combination of Kaspersky av 2014 and Malwarebytes Pro. Kaspersky regularly come out top on vb100 for virus detection.

Also don't bother installing Java unless you really need it, can't recall the last time I went to a site that required it.

And as the poster above said, common sense above everything else.

Firefox + noscript (a bit of an annoyance but stops 99% of that kind of malware dead in its tracks).

Ultimately a lot comes down to common sense though.

I know a lot of people will reccomend Chrome but for security but I find - if I set someone up on FF (without noscript) it will usually be a couple of months or so atleast before I need to clean up their PC, set them up on Chrome and they'll be back within a month needing malware removed, leave em on IE and they'll be back the next day :S

Nothing. AV provides a false sense of security.

Sensible behaviour and regular software patching will help more than any AV. Secunia PSI will help you with this, plus it's FREE.

You should consider putting your browser into click-to-play plug-in mode. http://www.ghacks.net/2012/07/21/configuring-chromes-click-to-play-feature/

You can use OpenDNS' FREE service to block known malware domains.

lol ZoneAlarm. People still use this POS?

MSE is adequate (you're kidding yourself if you think one AV will stop all hijacks/infections). Once infected, RougeKiller, TDSSKiller (from Kasperski) and Malwarebytes, in that order, should have you back in control.

Not used a resident AV since 2007 tbh, and no, not had a virus either

How did you get them?

Keep the following up to date
Windows update
Your browser
Flash
Java

Personally, I use Chrome/Firefox with adblock plus, and no antivirus. (for maximum speed)

Don't disable UAC either, it could save your bacon.
