Hello there!

I'm looking to upgrade my gaming PC, as the one I currently have is getting on a bit in years!

(Current rig in sig).

I am looking to move to a Haswell based system, but I'm not quite sure what is best. I have a maximum budget of £1000, and I need a new CPU, motherboard and RAM.

I want something that is powerful, can be overclocked and is amazing for gaming, and some image and video processing. Also something that can handle two SLI cards in the coming months.

I have look at something like this:

Would this suit my needs? Or are there better motherboards? All the difference chipsets confuse me a lot!

Thanks!

Sure it is, at the end of the day its a solid overclocking board which does 2-way SLI+Crossfire and has plenty of SATA+USB ports.

Is there a feature on a board you specifically need?

Not that can I think of.

I just want enough SATA ports, and a decent amount of slots for cards. Is there something cool I might want in a board? :D

Apart from gaming, what else do you use your PC for, as I notice you have 12GB ram in your current system and have specced 16GB for the upgrade. 8GB of ram is more than enough for gaming.
Also, do you really need the 900D?
I would be looking at either getting another 670 for sli or upgrade it, but then I suppose it depends on what games you play and if you want to max out your game settings.

I use it for some video editing when I make game videos (when I can be bothered). I have 12GB in the current rig, as it's triple channel, so 16GB felt like the most logical step upwards from there.

Haha yes, I do need the 900D ;) I have a large Coolermaster case currently, but I hate it, space wise it feels messy. I always feel like I am struggling for space in it with the water loop in there.

I do like to max my settings, and my current CPU is getting old. I think it is now 4 years old, and while it's still running well, I am starting to feel I deserve a small upgrade :)

I actually think you should skip Haswell and keep what you have and get the new case, 2nd hand GTX670 to do SLI is like £170'ish if you have a suitable 750W PSU.

I have a suitable PSU yes. Only issue is I would need to try and find a 670 waterblock.

Like I said, I have the money, so it's not a massive issue there.

Do you think I won't see the performance increases with an i5? Or just that the cost isn't worth it?

Hmm ok.

Well, I know I definitely want the case. The rest can maybe wait a little longer. Is there anything else due on the horizon, like Ivybride-E or something that would be worth it?

Ivybridge-E is already out (X79 board and i7 4960K etc).

Next year there is something called Broadwell which may or may not be compatible with current Haswell boards.

Next year sometime, its all hidden under NDA so I couldn't tell you if I knew and I couldn't tell you I was under NDA to tell you lol

After the news about Broadwell today, I won't be waiting for that.

I'm either going to go Haswell, Ivybridge-E or just sit on what I have and maybe go with a GPU upgrade for now.

Case is a definite, I need the space!
