Ryan Shrout on Nvidia vs AMD value for money

AMD are placing an apple like hardware check chip on the 290/X that blocks the Audio signal if you don't use the lead that comes with your AMD GPU. Not sure on the effects of this.

It is at 50:55 in the video.

They actually said it has to do with blocking non-bundled DVI-HDMI adapters. If you desolder the chip or in some way disable it, you get no audio too. That's whack.

The only explanation they offered was "not wanting to support other peoples' hardware" but I think it's inexcusable.

So if you use a different DVI cable, you will get all your audio blocked? I hope they supply lots of leads then, as the multi monitor uses will be ******

Or have I misunderstood?

Where did they say that?

Damnit. Just seen I put 'uses' instead of 'users'...Rusty will be throwing rotten veg at me now via email :D

I can see I will loose this one ;)

I think people are getting a bit to exited over this audio / cables business and seeing conspiracies everywhere.

"If you desolder the chip or in some way disable it, you get no audio too. That's whack" well, take out the CPU in your computer, you get no computer, surprisingly.

And if something "doesn't work" with this or that cable that is not "blocking it" its simply that "it doesn't work with that cable" hence why they are supplying cables.

To be more specific according to the story presented by pcper if you do not use a AMD branded DVI to HDMI connector that follows with your Radeon gfx the HDMI sound will not be passed through.

The reason im correcting it Greg is if there is another slow thinker like myself that thought you were talking about the True Audio system which this isnt about.

Now to my opinion about it. WTF..... how pointless is that, no body is going to use the dvi port anyway for sound as up until now Radeon cards have had a seperate HDMI port. Now if they were to drop that and only offer HDMI through the DVI port then again WTF?!?

Thank god its such a small stupid thing and not something that is severely going to affect your user experience.
