Anyone see this on Monday night? If not....

http://www.channel5.com/shows/on-benefits-proud/episodes/on-benefits-proud

Made my blood boil! Yes, I know this is a selected group of benefits claimants and not everyone is like that, yada yada but I do think the left wing media (i.e Guardian) and the likes of SpankenTexan over-estimate the genuine bad luck stories of the successful £30k a year worker who finds himself redundant and like to pretend those shown in the documentary above are just extremes and a tiny minority. The fact is where these people live there are whole communities of people who think like the people in the programme.

By personal favourite highlights were...

* The woman talking about Sky (paying for TV) in the same context as paying the heating the bill.

* The same woman saying she'd happily take a job if it would pay her £500 a week AFTER all other expenses had been paid.

* The same woman again having a go at her daughter for getting a job.

* The workless guy saying he was 'knackered' at quarter past 9 in the morning after doing nowt since he'd got up.

* The girl who lives entirely off the state claiming she was an 'independent woman'.

* The woman with 11 children who claimed she was entitled to society paying for her because she has 11 kids and there is 'no law saying how many kids you can have'.

*The bloke saying that footballers get £90k a week when they don't deserve it (who is then seen buying the Sky packages and football shirts that fund those wages)

The sad thing is just how uneducated these people are. You can hear it in everything they say and they seem to not be able to understand basic rationality or how an economy works.

I found it funny the guy who complained about footballers also complained he would like to go out with his wife * sat in the pub having a pint playing darts with his wife and son in law *

I've been in Stockton all week. I'm yet to meet a local who doesn't fit the description of the types described here. Total wastes of oxygen.

Agree it's not a total lie however the numbers are so small that I wouldn't want the government apply the sledgehammer approach which affects the genuine.

Oh that's too late

The problem is the "genuine" in itself is subjective. I would say that the number of people who live the vast majority of their lives off the welfare state are mostly in that situation due to their own life choices/decisions rather than just bad luck.

Sure anyone can be made redundant and have to live off benefits for a while, but I think you underestimate the number of people who choose to live off 'the system'.

Made my blood boil!

That's what it's designed to do, don't be so gullible. 99% of claimants are struggling and lots of people are having to resort to food banks due to draconian sanctions, this is all brought about by the 'lets punish all benefits claimants cos they're all scum' mentality that this government have cultivated with help from the media.

Why is it gullible to me angry at the attitudes shown in the programme? 99% of people aren't serial killers but it would still make my blood boil hearing Fred West justify his actions (not that I'm comparing benefit claimants to Fred West of course).

I'd be surprised to see where this 99% figure comes from. Sure if you include everyone who gets some kind of benefit then of course the majority aren't like that (given the universal nature of the welfare state bounds the majority into receiving some kind of hand out) but I'm more interested in the people who ENTIRELY live off the welfare state. I'd be shocked if the majority of those were just 'unlucky'.

Send them back...Wait a minute!

Don't really see anything that would make my blood boil considering I wouldn't want to trade places with any of these **** stained chavs. Just makes you feel better you are not a benefits scrounger than anything else.
