Neighbour asked to scrounge our wifi

Its interesting how things have changed with routers becoming password protected, as WiFi stealing used to be quite a common practise.

When I went travelling in the mid 00's, which was before we had proper smartphones, it was pretty common to try and see if you could use an unsecured WiFi connection, which is why you would often see people crop up in strange places.

The most amusing account I remember of WiFi stealing was when I'd moved into a house abroad where we had our own unsecured network. We lived on a cul-de-sac, which backed onto a river, there really wasn't much else around us. One day I spotted out the window a guy perched on a large rock by the river with a laptop on his lap. It seemed such a random and strange place to be sat that he could only be stealing our WiFi. I pointed it out to a housemate who asked how would I know...... So I said "Watch", then pulled the plug from the router and he quickly packed up and left.

After having given this some thought, you can make her sign a contract each day/week she uses your system. Assign her a Static Local IP Address and retain your Router logs.

If any issues arise, the router will be seized and analysed and you can categorically show the correlation between her computer artefacts, the contract, and the router logs.

It is still possible to compromise wireless networks. However it is not legal to do so.

Change SSID to "Get yer own WIFI!" or similar, and tell her to do one!

This is coming from a trucker who used to regularly jump into wifi networks, unannounced shall we say, when I was nighting out all over the country..... at least I didn't have the audacity to ask!!! :o :D

To be honest though, if you asked me if you could use my wi-fi while you stay the night outside in your truck I would just give you the password. I couldn't go for days on end without internet access so why should I expect you to :p

The OP's situation is different however, she *could* just buy her own wi-fi and she provides no other reason for needing to use it. Tell her to get stuffed.

I don't think she'd do anything bad with it and i'm always too nice to want to say no to people. Anybody got any ideas if you can throttle speeds with the new virgin superhubs?

I pity people like you. It's all well and good to be nice to people but this isn't the time, if she wanted to borrow some sugar sure no harm done but to use your internet? Do what the rest of the people are saying in this thread.

In B4 "Police at door asking why my internet connection is being used to browse child porn - what should I do?" thread.

I need closure on whether this master criminal, netflix gourging, paedo-gran is now merrily constructing a new version of the silk road on your internetz.

Wait! So Op gave the wifi pass in the end? I must have missed that.

Massive :/

I wouldn't give it to anyone (family would be fine) under any circumstances. Once you give it her she'll want more and more because she's a lazy, tight leech by the sound of things. If anything change your SSID to 'GTFO Tramp'.
