This. A cold is passing around the office like the plague at the moment, but if no-one comes in it'll just cause even bigger problems.
Personally I'll go into the office if I can make it, my boss will send me home if she doesn't think I should be there.

All you need to man up. Im proud that I've only had one sick day in the past 4 years (I wasnt even ill, just couldnt be bothered going in). Now im rarely rarely ill, once in a year I would say. Now plenty of people have come into work with chest infections ect. And did I get ill from it? Hell no. Just man up

Time off work for a cold is pretty lame really, and there is no concern about spreading the virus because the most contagious stage is before yon show any symptoms. So if you really want to avoid spreading illness then you should never ever turn up to work!

yup - its also passed on by touch in the vast majority of cases.... basic personal hygiene (washing hands regularly) could prevent most colds.

OP - wash your hands, stop blaming others for your situation and MTFU

I very rarely get the office cold. If I do get ill I make sure I come into work, because it's always a good one and knocks out half the staff for weeks

I was going to say, washing your hands solves most issues.

In our company if you a sick you also don't shake hands with people.

Sat in your office you are doing no harm to anyone.

Im a contractor and dont get paid for being on the sick until i reach the point of being eligible for SSP, so yeah, deal with it, if you dont want me in work ill, pay me for being off.

Dead or alive, ill be having my pay thanks.

Agree with the OP. Don't come in to work when you're ill, it will just spread the plague around. If you're not ill enough to be off "sick", but ill enough to be annoying everyone else by infecting them, then just work from home FFS!

It's the same with schools, one parent sends in their child who's ill and then boom the whole class has got it!

It's only a cold, wouldn't stop me going to work as I'd still be able to carry out my duties.

I've had actual flu before (not when people have a cold) it kept me in bed for a week, just couldn't move.

Depends where you work. I got sent home a few weeks back, when I had a cold. I didn't particularly want to go home, but the manager insisted. It was very inconvenient for them too, as they had to call someone else in at 6am.

I'd only take the day off if the illness was leaving me in physical pain or I'm actually vomiting or something (norovirus etc).

Otherwise a cold with runny nose and watery eyes etc, suck it up. Dose up on meds and get on with your job. Be as considerate as possible and clean your hands regularly and cover your mouth and nose when sneezing and do your general best to avoid passing it on. If somebody else catches it, tough luck.

Might seem selfish of me, but by you wanting me to stay off work to avoid the possibility of passing the cold on to you, you are by the very act of thinking that thinking selfishly. I believe they call that psychological egoism.

I don't do it to 'brown-nose', suck up, gain brownie points or whatever you want to call it. I do it because I want to and feel like I should because I'm invariably being relied on by the company and or clients and also because I know I'll only have to catch up and work extra hours to make up for it anyway.

I agree with OP. It's not just about the contagion factor. I hate having people coughing and sneezing all over me in the office. I suppose it depends how bad the symptoms are.

Ahhh "man flu", one of my pet hates. It's either a cold or a flu. Cold = I go to work. Flu = floors you, don't go to work. Man flu = a hypochondriac with a cold trying to pass it off as being a flu.

Btw guys, get you flu jabs booked. The clinic at my workplace opens next week :-)

If no clinics at work, you can get them done at Sainsbury's etc for £8 IIRC.

When until are ill you won't necessarily be spreading the illness because with the active symptoms you will take more are, e.g. Not shaking hands with people.

The contagious stage is before there are any active symptoms. If you don't want people spreading illnesses then bad idly no one cane ver to up to work, ever, because you never know when you have the virus in its contagious state.

It is also a big myth that sneezing and coughing is some how spreading diseases. Many of your common colds are only spread through physical touch and then ingestion.
