Volunteering - Does anyone here give their time?

I volunteer at Age UK at least once a week sometimes more. Been doing this for about 3 years now. I help run an IT drop in for the over fifties. I recommend it highly to others with a philanthropic urge.

The only people I know of who volunteer are non-working single mums who are bored out of their skull but don't want to do any work that will stop the benefits.

How generous!

Well clearly you don't know me, or the many thousands of other people who willingly give up their time to help others for no pay and little thanks, every single week.

I don't any longer unfortunately, as I don't have enough free time, but I did volunteer with Samaritans for just shy of three years, as a listener at my local branch, answering the phones, talking to people face-to-face and answering emails. Also spent a short time on the management committee.

Learnt a lot about life in that time. Well worth it if you have the time and capability I'd say. Was 4-8 hours a week after work.

no, I don't know you.

It wasn't a judgment on people who volunteer. It was a judgment on people who live on benefits and then give up their already paid for time by volunteering.

Being on benefits has nothing to do with it. If people want to help others for no reward then why should it matter if they are working or on benefits ? You come over as very ignorant when you suggest this.

I mean benefits because they can't work, but then go out and work for free knowing that they already have money coming in because ... they cant work?

They are only volunteering because they are getting paid!

I'm an occasional helper at the local Scout group and I go on working parties to maintain the district campsite if that counts.

Please re-read what you have just said.

Seriously, you are talking ****e !

I'm currently out of work because I have health issues, but I volunteer because it helps give some purpose to my life and I also like helping people. People like you saying the things you say deeply offend me.

Just pause for thought for a moment and realise what you said is something I find deeply offensive.

I worked out that I've volunteered around 900 hours in the last 12 months. That's 24.5 (5.5 months) weeks of full time work on top of a full time job.

There's a huge difference between doing a bit of volunteering on the side and doing a 9-5 job 5 days a week...

Just because someone isn't capable of doing full time work in x industry or x environment doesn't mean they can't volunteer a few hours a week in a very specific situation.

Yup - I volunteer at Brooklands museum (see sig).

Used to do every Saturday, but now I've moved I come down when asked/important things are going on!

Up to about 3000 hours based on my rough calcs.

I used to do bits for amnesty international, but I haven't for a while now.

I've been debating meals on wheels but I'm not mr. uber freindly ask about your life, and I think you need to be in order to do justice to the role.

Recently started volunteering for a local bike project, helping kids get into cycling and maintaining their bikes and hopefully teaching them how to fix various things (only 3 hours a week at the moment)

I volunteered to get chased by 2000 women once, there I met my girlfriend, we now live together and are looking at planning our wedding next year.

:D

3 hours a week is still a considerable amount of time volunteering if you're holding down a full-time job etc too :)
