*** League of Legends ***

Well last night was absolutely awful, lost 6 rankeds won 2, but hey, only down 10 points which isn't bad tbh, will hopefully do better tonight. Also, benny after talking to you last night i had to delete you, my chat is messed up and it kept spamming me random letters, will re add you tonight.

Last nights 2 games were both losses. First one we got stomped by a team after we fed their Corki and Kassadin. Our ADC went 2-8-2 and our fiddle jungle insisted on trying to solo 4 people...

2nd game involved someone trying to take Quinn top leaving only myself as any sort of engage or tank with Udyr. Our mid lane Karthas kept trying to chase kills and got himself destroyed. He claimed he did nothing wrong as he had most kills despite only getting them through using his Ult after he died.

Sometimes I just hate this game. Back down to 30 pts in S2.

struggled for the first part last night myself, the trolls were out in force!

First three games, I had 2 afk people, one troll who didn't want to support so just went ADC at bottom next to me and a Jungler who wouldn't gank! Surprisingly won one of those games, then the next three to put me back up to 20 points in B1, so all going well I should get out of Bronze by Thursday night.

How does the ranking system work? I understand it's a bad idea for me to even play ranked before 30, and not to bother with runes until 20 and just get tier 3.

You can't actually played ranked until 30 anyway. Requirements are lvl30 and 16 owned champs.

Runes will always help you in your games if using appropriate ones but the problem stems from you can only buy them with IP and the T3's can be expensive. Life Steal T3 Quints are 2050IP each for example.

If you are stacking IP then spending a bit on them pre30 will help but you will get more if you just wait and don't mind playing without.

Personally I had loads pre30 but I do find now I am having to save to get some for new champs I am starting on. eg I only have 1 Lifesteal quint and saving is taking weeks.

Rushing into ranked at 30 can also be bad as you might not fully understand mechanics. Some people can and some can't. I went in once I topped 150 wins in normals and over 250 total games played. That is still quite new by some standards but I played my normals mainly in 3's or 5's with friends who were gold or plat so learnt quicker than if I was playing on my own due to their guidance and help.

Any tips for a total newbie?

Installed the game Monday and played the tutorial last night. Played a character called "Garen" who I enjoyed.

I don't know what Carry/Jungler etc means....Im familiar with RPGs in general but this is all new terminology to me.

just keep playing, literally no point in explaining anything like that to you until your at least L20 , its too complex

I watched this last night for a refresher as some of my mates explained it to me ages back when I tried playing with them.

It might be helpful. But I'm like you, I have no idea how the mechanics work in terms of terminoligy like AD carrier, tank (I know what a tank is, but no idea who or how it works in this game) etc etc.

So for me, I've been advised to stick to Ashe, Sivir or Jinx (I will probably buy Jinx as I really enjoyed playing her last night). Which are AD characters... I think, someone will probably correct me and please do. I don't know what I'm doing lol.

Those characters are ranged and go bottom, basically last hit minions for gold and attack only when it's safe. Stick to coop vs AI until level 15 (again, what I've been told).

Other than that, I'm as clueless as you mate haha!

Thanks for that, will check out the vid.

ADC - AD Carry - Attack Damage Carry - Does primarily physical attack damage and has little defence or escape. Intended to "carry" the game by doing high levels of sustained damage to targets. Usually used in lane with a support to provide additional sustain or defence/control.

APC - AP Carry - Ability Power Carry - Does primarily magic based damage and has some defence or escape. Can carry a game through high damage. Can be an "Assassin" based character.

Assassin - High burst damaged and used for taking out high priority targets (APC's, ADC's, Supports). Can be AD or AP and will usually have high mobility.

Jungle - Support/Utility character used to farm the jungle between lanes. Supports all 3 lanes with ganks and for tower pushing. Can be either high damage, CC or tank or a combination of the 3. Should be warding and taking/helping with the blue and red buffs. Will be in the enemy jungle too denying farm and buffs. Highly mobile characters used to get between lanes.

Bruiser - Combo of tank and damage character. Good in 1 to 1 trades and for holding the solo lanes (usually top). Sits on the frontline and will usually have at least 1 form of CC to assist in team fights.

Tank - Front line in team fights. Usually starts the engage. Will have very high sustain and/or CC forcing enemy team to attack him allowing the carry's to remain unhurt.

Support - Utility character with good CC/Supporting abilities like heals, mana regen, stunes etc. Used to support the team. In low ELO games everyone assumes the support provides wards. In higher elo games, all players will be warding as vision wins games.

The above is based on my playing since March and other people may define them slightly differently.

Shadowman, thank you so much, those descriptions are clear and to the point, exactly what I needed. I guess I prefer the ADC classes then as I enjoy that playstyle the most. I would like to try assassin. Any suggestions of when and if there is any point in trying that class?

Thanks

Be very careful with applying terms like "classes" to champions, they are a alright guide but most champions can and are played in very different roles.

In terms of assassins, they tend to work best Mid lane due to the fact that in that lane you are usually up against a squishy champion, meaning you can actually use your burst damage to kill them, top lane where you will find bruisers/tanks that becomes a lot more difficult.

One thing however is that assassins tend to be a little more complicated to play than some other champions due to the fact that if you screw up their combo in a fight or fall behind in lane against your opponent, you really can't do much.

My advice would be to play beginner, vs AI games, and just pick whatever champions you want to, play whatever lane and whatever build, mess around and get used to the mechanics of the game.

If you want some help building a champion in game, look at some guides here: http://www.lolking.net/guides/

Really? when i first started playing i just jumped straight into normals.

Almost two years that i've been playing!

The difference now is there are more and better players, 2 years ago LoL was nowhere NEAR as big as it is now, as a result normals and ranked are very different landscapes for new players.

I've never played a bot game or AI game in all the games I've played. I don't agree with them.

How can you not "agree with them"? What is there to disagree with?

I mean if someone played LoL exclusively against/with bots then I could understand but no one does.

The only thing to be wary of with bot games is that the AI is very easy to exploit. The only things you should take from bot games is CS'ing, general mechanics and knowledge of champions abilities. Not how to go up against champions. I had a game on Jinx yesterday 2v1 against Kayle and Alistair bot. Thanks to the snare and the slow I kept getting kills in a lane I would have lost utterly against real players. By the time I'd taken the tower (first of the game I might add) I'd got about 7 kills.

I tend to play a Coop vs AI (intermediate) game with every champion I've not played that comes up on rotation just to get some understanding of its abilities (or if it's been a while and/or I'm not clear on something). I've been playing a lot of games with Vayne lately to get the hang of CS'ing as I miss last hits far too often for no good reason.

Wrote out a long response but closed the wrong window... the TLDR of it, I don't see it as beneficial at all playing against bots, even if it's your first time ever playing the champ I still think it should be done in live play, that way you can build up experiences, it's all about building up experiences against other players rather an AI.
