290X Vs 780 in BF3 Bench results.

Yeah I'm up for it. I have a Titan and 780 too although I wont be benching them again as I was benching for the last two nights getting the review finished and as pgi947 said, theres only so much sword breaker a man can take lol.

I start the clock (fraps) running from the moment you shoot the first of the two RPGs in the building, turn and run left until you are almost opposite the camper van. Lob two grenades toward the first car (if done correctly you will blow both cars and van up, if not the van will blow up with a few shots. By this time the enemy will have picked them selves up from the blast and pick them off one at a time :).

Give me a full run down of the settings you want me to run and I'll go load it up.

CPU=3960X @ 4.5ghz
16gb 1866MHz 9-10-9

I choose everything as ultra and leave everything else as is. I don't blame you for not running it on another card and we will get someone to bench it on a 780 like Tonester or Pgi (pretty please guys) :p

My CPU is at 4.625Ghz and ram is at 2333Mhz. No bottleneck at this speed and any higher makes no difference at all for me.

I locked my core to 1050Mhz and my memory is default 3005Mhz.

Good work, it's nice to see a summary. Do you plan on adding the other games they all test?

I hadn't intended on and was just using BF3, as it has been the defacto on this forum since it was released. It is clear that the 290X is a winner on reference card Vs reference card anyways in BF3 :)

Good thread, im in the mood for a gpu upgrade just now, though i might just hold of and see what the 780ti brings to the battle. Bf3 and 4 are the games ill be mainly playing.

These are day one drivers too, whereas Nvidia has had plenty of time to perfect theirs now.

It's an exciting card but it's just too hot and too loud for me.

Agreed Andy and although the 290X is still based on GCN and the 7970, I feel they will be able to pull more performance out of the card.

I ran a 1080P bench as well and kept the same clocks/settings for comparison reasons and on the exact same test as the 1440P bench.

Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg
39297, 329599, 80, 184, 119.227

A little unfair, as the default clocks boost is probably a tad under my 1050Mhz but ran it on a clock for clock test for curiosity purposes.

What core speed do you want me to run the 290X at? 1050MHz? What memory speed?

Yer, if you can run the core at 1050Mhz and leave the memory as is please (5000Mhz). You have a bit more on the memory than me and the 780 but it wouldn't be fair to drop it under its default clock.

Hmmm, 2560x1440 doesn't show as a selectable res for me :(.

Anyway here are two runs at 1080p (Ultra)

60 second run car park scene, swordbreaker.

No problems.

Here's a rough and ready noise test (apologies for crappy iphone. My vid camera ain't charged).

20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, 100% and back again.

interesting thread. It's nice to have people here do their own benchmarks and see what happens.

I am not too sure there will be much performance increase from drivers, maybe for individual games, but, I think the big boost for GCN from drivers has come and gone.

It's back to the waiting game now :-) See what mantle brings to the table in December. Hopefully this meeting in November will clear up some of the questions that are been asked about mantle.

Thanks for the noise level video W3bbo, 20%, 40% and 60% aren't too bad at all.

Can you give your impressions of the noise level? I mean it always louder on videos when you are only a few inches from the card.

I would like to hear what the noise is like inside a case.

Was the same on 7970 reference. 60% Will be good enough for at least 1200 core and at that territory you're beating 1300mhz 780's.

It's louder than a 7970 tbh.

To be fair it never got to the noisiest levels while I was reviewing despite being around the 94/95c mark throughout. I would say the noise was around the 40-60% area under constant load.

Of course that is at stock speed. OVerclocked will generate more heat and thus a higher rpm fan speed will be needed to keep it at 95c.
