Moving To England And Need Advice

If you want to keep your US passport not only will you be paying tax here in the UK but you'll also have to pay tax in the US. Majority of people that have to work for any long period of time around the world, unless they're super rich, normally relinquish their US citizenship.

Not true i've been here 3.5 years took 6 months off before starting work, wife moved back here 4 years ago to do the visa process. We just bought a house, if you work hard you get rewarded in the USA. Both of us had no credit when we moved here.

I could not have afforded to run 2 cars in the UK, esp one of them being a gas guzzling 3.7L V6 jeep lol.

Although i do miss the public transport and health care system.

I never said its impossible, its just hard and takes lots of effort to do things which you already have in UK. If you do make it, its very rewarding but it is by no means easy.

Public transport dependant where you live... I am in chicago atm and public transport is very good... Besides beggars...

Should be able to get into a 1st line role aslong as he has some experience and ability to demonstrate it - second line would be a bit trickier though.

Job market around Bristol at the moment doesn't look too bad - if your a reasonably good people person and pro-active theres quite a lot of opening in the £17-25k region that don't require a huge amount in the way of qualifications.
 
Previous job had quite a few American (from Texas and Louisiana mostly) engineers and all loved it here. Most initially came over on either business or bubble assignments and then made the choice to transfer over permanently.
Their main compliments were the fact that in the states they found people to be sickly nice to the point where you knew it was false ("Have an Awesome day sir") and people here were genuine, the public transport is much better, healthcare and more holidays! One of them was mostly impressed with the lack of Mexicans but...meh, he was a bit odd.

Not sure as to expectations but in terms of a reasonably decent job to get started the prospects aren't too terrible. (tbh in this area I've not worked above first line so not really sure beyond that whats what).

Obviously this will be the case where ever you pick, generally London and surrounding area's have the best salary, but comes at a price, in terms of higher living costs.

What ever you do don't pick Wales if you after salary, sure you can get the salary if you look hard enough, but salaries are much better over in England if you are setting up.

We need a project manager for some horrible project no one wants to get their hands dirty on ;)
 
I'm sure you will enjoy your stay here, there is an incredible amount to see and do and you will be only a few hours plane journey away from some of the most historic cities in the world. People who can't find things to do in the UK must be very dull people.

Can't help on the IT front though. Unless you do support work for big engineering companies?
 
Wow guys! Thanks for all the positive feedback.. for the most part ;) We live in central Florida now. The tourist hub of the state, Disney, Seaworld, etc. I imagine the temp change is going to be a shock! Either way I appreciate all the good advice, I half expected to get BOO'd off the board. You've given me a lot to think about, thanks!
