Upgrade gone wrong... what now?

Now overclock that 920 because sitting at 2.66 is sacrilege and you should burn on the stick. :)

Hi all,

I recently upgraded my much loved Radeon 5850 and decided to do a deal with the devil(as it turns out) NVidia. I upgraded my PSU, as my old one was 4years old and apparently I can save on electricity with this new one plus it would mean it could deal with 2x 660GTX(Nvidia) no problem, it does...

So as you now know I went for the SLI route, thinking I would be "blown" away, and I'm devastated. Battlefield 4 does run nice but if I go away from the screen for 5mins, so no inputs, it just crashes. I thought I'll wait for a patch, I get Crysis 3 for a tenner as I have actually been wanting this. Everything maxed out and the frame rate can go down to 20? Is this supposed to happen? Then when I played it last it crashed too, with a "DX" problem.

I did read about people getting headaches dealing with Sli issues but I didn't listen.

Firstly does anyone know what FPS I should get with x2 GTX660 on Ultra @ 1080P in Crysis 3? If what I'm getting is about right then I should have put my £380 (could have survived without PSU purchase) towards a good PS4 bundle.

The cards are going back, but I want a reliable replacement card, and I'm thinking Radeon/AMD, I would be willing to put in £250-£300, can someone please recommend a beast of a card that will chew up Crysis 3 for that price?

Thanks

Dave

For £380 a 780 is an excellent choice and will run crysis 3 with the bells and whistles at 1080p. A 2 mid range card set up is to be avoided at all costs for me and you should always get the best single card you can afford as you might add another further down the line whilst the mid range route means you are stuck with what you have and heavily reliant on sli support

All the bells and whistles you say?

Are you for real? It'll rinse pretty much everything maxed out at 1080p and even more so when overclocked.

May I ask if this is a special ability of the Matrix Plat or an opinion of 7970's in general?
Either way, it's not true.

Yeah, they'll run most things at high-maxed settings with a decent OC, but try running Crysis 3, Tomb Raider, Metro etc at fully maxed settings and see what happens :)

The minimums you see in Crysis will likely be your CPU if it is only clocked at 2.66ghz. My 2500k at 4.3ghz bottlenecked my 670's in Crysis 3. Now i have a 3770k at 4.5ghz and minimums and gpu usage have shot up by a lot!

Not sure about the crashing but i doubt it is just SLI causing the issues.

I do and it eats they eat them... tomb Raider? Lol... Easiest game ever..... ,axed out and never out of 60fps v-sync...

Really?
Would you mind posting your Tombraider benchmark score at fully maxed settings?(4xAA/TressFX/Ultimate etc).
Also, take a look at those Crysis 3 benchmarks with Titans and 780's and explain how your 7970 gets double their fps if you wouldn't mind :)

@1080P surely £300 should be enough for just the graphics card to slaughter Crysis 3!? Technology seems to be in Limbo. My 5850 could do Crysis 3 on High and low AA.

It's nothing to do with technology.

Crytek release Crysis (1) and there is no technology on earth powerful enough to run it. People complain and moaned.

Crysis Warhead only performed better because they removed lots of scenery and enemies. People complained amd moaned.

Crysis 2. Dumbed down launch with only DX9 enabled. Very linear closed levels. People complained and moaned.

Crysis 3. A hybrid of the two. People complained and moaned.

The moral of this story? you can't win. *shrugs and walks away*

I only have the one GPU as the one is borked... I can run it on a single GPU?

And those Crysis 3 charts are all wrong..... My 7950 doesn't run in the 20's on average...

Hang on, we're talking about this post in reference to the apparent ability of a 7970 matrix:
Are you for real? It'll rinse pretty much everything maxed out at 1080p and even more so when overclocked.

What settings are you running crysis 3 on?
We are talking about single card performance btw :)

My original post was about 2 cards.... And I said it'll rinse pretty much everything.... Not everything....

Yes, and the post I originally quoted was to do with the performance of a single 7970.
Somehow, you've managed to bring dual 7950's into it and also make out the charts are wrong based on that.

It's getting a bit confusing here mate :)

Guys, how way man! Stop the hand bags. I'm seriously thinking of just sticking with one 660gtx, it obviously doesn't max out Crysis 3, but the game still looks stunning for a £132 upgrade, exc the PSU, I'm thrilled!

Must say that Battlefield 4 is a superior game graphically and seems to use a better engine then the cryo 3 one as I can run on really high settings and the FPS are a rock solid 50FPS.

Bad engine for Crysis 3 I reckon.

Just want to say thank you to all the input, I found it all interesting and helpful :)

lol, there's no hand bags here. It's just a matter of clarity, that's all.

Lol some people have no idea! Agreed not a chance that a 7970 plat would eat everything at 1080p. My 780 at 1267/6800 couldnt even do that so how a card that is slower manages that beats me. Almighty see my 780 vs 7990 thread for proof that even 780/titans aren't powerful enough for 1080p maxed.

ps. The Antec 902 V3 is big enough for two 7950/70 as thats what time using.... just in case u think you'l need to upgrade ;)
