Virgin Media Discussion Thread

After a couple of delays from July-Oct my 120mbit has gone live :D

I'm probably being paranoid here, but I just got this email from VM (supposedly) and it comes across as amateurish, nothing like other emails I receive from VM. So I'm wondering if it's dodgy and not actually from VM and someone wants to monitor me typing in my account login details?

Badly written, "Thank you for helping us serves you better"
No space between Dear Customer and the first sentence.
'To [email protected]' I've no idea who that is either.
Bad capitalisation in the title "virgin media Update"

If in doubt just go to the official site without using the link in the email, or check the forums.

No email should be asking you to update your account via a hyperlink.

Apart from the obvious typos, that's email spam-spotting 101.

Everyday for the past 4 days at exactly 5:09pm my internet goes from perfectly fine to a complete mess. Websites won't load, massive packet loss, high pings etc

This goes on all night until I just give up and go to bed, then next day when I wake up it is fine, perfect even. Then 5:09pm comes around and like clockwork it goes to **** all over again.

All my power levels on my modem are fine, my router is fine and I've tried using the connection without the router plugged in and it stays problematic.

I've called Virgin and they're useless as always, each time I've called they've blamed a completely different problem.

Does anyone have a clue wtf is going on?

Yeah as above, congested area.

Tell them you're not happy/satisfied paying for a 12 hours-a-day service. They'll probably give you half off your internet bill.

Expect problems to last anywhere between 3 and 9 months. When my area was hit with congestion it took them about 5 months to get it fixed. I was on 20Mb back then. But in the end I'm glad I stayed. Went through 50Mb, 100Mb and now on 120Mb and it's fantastic.

What I find peculiar about Virgin Media's congestion issues is that they seem to just materialise out of nowhere. I mean any junior networking admin can monitor a network and see it's getting dangerously close to self-destruction. They seem to wait until it actually breaks down, and then wait a further 3 months before they do anything.

or free internet... which i'm getting.

i'm in a congestion/high utilization area, and so far it's been 6-7months and they still haven't come out to fix it, I've lost count on how many times they've changed the fix date.

Yes, had my problem for 9 months before it was fixed. The download was perfectly fine just the upload but I still got 70% off my bill each month for that period of time.

Forgive my limited network knowledge but if it was because of high utilization how come it happens at an exact time and not round about peak time, and also why does it still not work at 3-4am but at 3-4pm when you would imagine more people are on the network it works fine.

I wouldn't care if it was just slow, but I can't even get Sainsburys to load to finish my shopping

I'd complain about this on their forum, I've done it a few times and had my issue's resolved.

Helppppp.

My download speeds are really slow when using a web browser. 200-300 KB/sec, but if I download a game on steam I'm getting 2MB/s.

What's goin' on?
