I got a new job - do I go XF 290???????

Brilliant card :)

Obviously you can't compare a custom cooler to a reference one, that would be stupid  however I don't see any custom coolers for the 290 so that's a bit difficult at the moment.

OP have you looked into Shadowplay as you mention you like to record videos through FRAPS.

hhmmm, but with non-reference coolers they add to the ££££ of the card.

The 290 was appealing at £320 not £380 each or what ever.

Is SLI GTX680 2GB an option?

What about a single card solution, do any offer double my GTX680 in performance?

I only wanna record and play arma 3 well, not to worried about bf4...

Wouldn't it be better to just use shadow play? Or if performance isn't good enough with the 680 ,go 780 and use shadow play.i can't imagine a 290 using fraps is gonna beat a 780 with SP.

I've just made a recording for you Craptakular,

It's uploading now, Wasteland server with 63 guys on it, i use Afterburner to record, 98% quality, full frame, the performance hit recording with Afterburner is a fair bit less than Fraps, normally around 10-15fps.

Pay no attention to the bouncing Core clock, it's just Afterburner not reading it right.

clocks used were 1100/1400
Cpu @4.6

I'll post the vid as soon as it's uploaded.

The 290X will do that for you no problem at all bud, try not the listen to the guys saying it'll melt your rig with it's running temps or take off because the fan sounds like a jet.

It's simply not true, yes, the card runs hotter than 780gtx's with non ref coolers:rolleyes:, but that to be expected when buying a card with the reference coolers, how hot does the 290X run? it'll run about 95c if you play Furmark on 20% fan speed.

If your sensible, set the fan @55% the card doesn't get close, idles temps on mine are 30-35c with max reaching between 72-82c on bf4, which is much more gpu intensive than arma 3.

As for noise, the fan is no louder than the His 6950 it replaced, sure if you wap the fan to 100% it's too loud, but every damn card is the same, at 55% which i set for gaming, it can't be heard over the speakers i use which aren't set that loud at all.

I'll happily make a vid for you if you'd like to ease your mind.

How do you find that bearable? It's louder than a 480.
It boggles my mind that the 480 was slated as the worst thing ever due to heat and noise, yet these cards are hotter and louder but it's okay because they're AMD.

MY Credit card is trembling, but should I say fudge it and buy anyway.

My GTX680 cannot handle Arma 3 while using fraps and bf4 could run better...

Should I just go all in, feet first and buy two RX290??? or one RX290X?

Maybe even one GTX780?

Wait, buy non reference cards.

It seems to be people who've never tried the 290/290x saying it's too noisy - people who have it are saying it's audible but nowhere near as bad as being made out.

As for core temp, that doesn't mean the card has a heat problem. As has been pointed out before, core temp has nothing to do with heat generated. The 290 barely draws any more power on average over a 780.

 How do i find the fan @55 bearable? do you game with no sound? 55% isn't loud, and if i'm just browsing the internet the card goes to 20% and idle at 35-38c.

I've said countless times already that the 290X doesn't get anywhere close to 95c while gaming unless the fan is set at 22% or your playing Furmark.

As 290x owner i would say get 780 if You are not going water. Or wait for proper coolers on them.

Might be because people can't afford to buy both a 290 and a 780 to compare them in person. If you have the funds then do this and just RMA the card you don't want.

Sometimes people can only go by what reviewers say and when every review i've read says the same over and over it's hard not to have that doubt in the back of your mind. Lets not forget that people's opinion of silent or loud isn't set in stone, what I find acceptable might not be to someone else.

The 290 tends to run at 95 degrees which is perfectly fine for the card, great. I have no issue with this. However if I want to overclock the card and add more volts then that's going to increase the heat so i'll have to start messing with the fan speeds and so things are going to get louder, it's as simple as that.

Comparing that to my current 780 which is silent while gaming at stock speeds/volts and by silent I do mean silent. My CPU cooler is louder than the GPU.

I'm not bashing AMD, if I was going to water cool then I would have bought a 290x. If custom cooled 290x cards were available now it would have been a harder decision between that and the 780.

As someone said earlier, it's the same old thing. Nvidia card runs hot and it's the end of the world, AMD card runs hot and it's acceptable or vice versa. That is the reason people rear reviews as they 'tend' to be less bias sometimes.

I've kept an eye on the 290 owners thread since launch and plenty say it's a noisy beast. Whilst I trust OCuk members own reviews of cards in terms of performance I don't where noise is concerned because a) what is acceptable noise is very subjective and b) it very much depends on cooling in the case as to how bad it will get. I know for me personally my 5870 was at the limit of what I deem acceptable so I look at reviews and compare noise to the stock 5870.

I recall one guy at the 480 launch claiming the noise was fine during gaming, he later let slip he wears headphones when gaming . .

If you set a low target temp (which isn't necessary) and ramp the fan up then it's noisy, but the owners of the card have said that it's easy to use a slower fan and have it running quietly. Lots of review sites have said the same.

I don't think the cooler is very good, and it's certainly not good for overclocking the card, but people are taking high core temp to mean it throws out a ton of heat, which is nonsense. The cooler's basically just about adequate for running the card at stock clocks, which is what AMD reference coolers are always like.

Also worth noting - AMD has their own version of Shadowplay coming out too.

That they aren't even making.

My point was he doesn't need to upgrade his 680 is the only reason he is wanting to is the hit that fraps gives him. That's the impression I got from the original post.
