[serious] - got burgled last week

sounds about right.

will I get money? nope.

only if its a serious crime, then you maybe getting a couple of quid.

just got a call from AMEX - they are saying that it most likely will be authorised so the tickets and hotel I spent to go to the US this week will be refunded to me. So that's good of them.

this annoys me a lot about this country and the law - when you, as a decent human with common sense, do the right thing like hold him with reasonable force, and then for them to try and press charges on you for assault... WTF?

I'm not sure what's worse, that or the fact that the scrote could get away with saying 'the door was already kicked in and I only went inside for a look'. What kind of insanity is that?! I mean, I almost would expect someone to yell for an assault charge in that situation, to try and deflect the blame, but to be able to worm their way out of the fact they broke into a house?!

Invest in some good quality CCTV cameras, with thieves wearing gloves it is very hard for forensics to get anything from prints. You may say thieves will wear balaclavas too making CCTV obsolete, but you find if they are targeting a house they would walk past hours before casing the joint (obviously wearing no mask).

duff-man: I know mate, I know.

thing with CCTV - cant. not my place - it is rented. that's landlords responsibility. damage is done now, I wont be living there for sure. im just staying at a friends temporarily and rented an office to work from for a month (and kind of Regus to do what they did to help me straight away given the circumstances)

the other thing with the CCTV is that, if it got taken to court and you catch the guy, it may not be possible to submit the CCTV footage to court. why? because it was not put there by the authorites!

Having stuff stolen from you is horrendous and makes you feel violated. My wife had her bag snatched in Camden a couple of years ago. We didn't even see the guy do it. We had to spend the night in a hotel since the housekeys were in her bag. If I hadn't had my debit card on me I don't know what we would have done.

But what was the worst was the feeling of being taken advantage of. They probably tossed most of the stuff in the bag anyway, and there were some very important personal and sentimental items there.

sorry to hear everyones experience in this. not good at all.
what annoys me is that the police aren't that co-operative with me (me - the victim).
I bet they didn't even search his house or his accomplices either.

I know you cant claim back the business stuff, but surely you normal contents were covered?

If so, ham it up... say you had a 360, ps3, ipad, vita, iphone 5 or whatever... just max out your claim amount, you might not get it all back, but sod it, you are going to lose out it seems.. so play the system to get what you can.

I know you might need receipts/boxes/PoP etc but see if you can borrow something like that from a mate.

Your call, but if you are leaving the UK anyway in the future - milk it, thats what insurance is there for.

Seriously do NOT do this, why you're encouraging him to break the law and commit insurance fraud on a public forum beggers belief.

Worst advice I've read in a while, you do realise everyone else pays for fraud you may commit?

I was not after money for myself. The insurance company wanted paid back what they paid me!

Good news on the AMEX front.

Sorry to hear and I can feel for you, I was mugged recently (they took everything I had on me, laptop, phone, wallet, bag, house keys, etc...) where I used to previously live and after it happened I just didn't feel right going back there each and everyday and eventually moved out and away from the area.

Police are a joke here, they caught a guy with my phone a few days later but didn't even do him for handling stolen goods....Anyway I've given up thinking about it though it does at times come back and you start asking your self questions...

You gotta stay strong, not let feelings get the better of you and do your best to just move on from it. You only do yourself harm by pondering and thinking about it.

not good of them it's covered by their insurance

Which is why I love AMEX

Sorry to hear about your stuff what a bummer.

Since this is a hot topic I've always thought about installing a safe but worried that if these neds break in and see it they'll then break in again with some tools and wreck the house trying to steal it.

I'm getting an extension built and thought about installing the safe in the floor.

Anyone got a safe if so what do you think about it?

I've backed up all my photos and docs to dropbox so less worried about the pc than my passport and jewellery.

had two burglaries in my street last week , *******!

lock up , take keys out of windows and conservatory doors!

worst time of year , Christmas approaching and gets dark earlier.

Feel for you OP, really do.

I luckily stopped an attempted burglary on me last halloween, they literally kicked the whole door in they knocked first I ignored it thinking it was trick or treaters this was late and then all of sudden I hear a bang and I ran downstairs with a hammer going MENTAL. They probably got one hell of a shock.

Reason I went mental? I had literally 10k or more worth of musical equipment down there and which I basically need as MY JOB. If it had got stolen I'd have been ruined no joke....have no conents insurance.

I was never able to sleep again after that, I had extreme paranoia I'd hear a noise run downstairs with a hammer/knife.

Hopefully you had insurance, it won't replace the things that really matter but at least you can get some stuff back. The hard drives is a big one, I keep all my stuff backed up various places as I have a lot of important info if it got nicked i'd have been screwed too..

just got a text from the landlord saying my rent hasn't gone through.
um yes, because I am not staying there for now as I WAS BURGLED!!!!! I had to stop the rent and council tax (informing the council about the situation for the council tax).

its a bit... low isn't it? she just came back from her holiday too. she was the one that rung me in the morning to say that upstairs apparently heard disturbance which turned out to be me being burgled.
