How do police deal with amputees?

Most forces now equip officers with leg straps. Each strap is just under a meter long and has velcro loops on one side and the velcro hooks on the other. One strap is placed around the thighs just above the knees and another around the ankles to stop people kicking out. These can also be used with a detainee with one arm in effect to strap that arm to their body to stop them punching out etc.

Probably as much point as putting cuffs on someone they know isn't going to resist, yet they seem to *need* to put cuffs on everyone. It seems to be as much a part of being arrested as the reading of the caution is.

because you don't know if someone is suddenly going to turn. a nice poliete calm person may become massivly violent ocne you find that bit of evidence which royaly ****s them

I don't really understand the obsession with the use of handcuffs, they seemed to be used when arresting someone full stop, whether it's necessary or not.

As for your scenario, what choice do they have? They won't work so there isn't really anything that can do with them. I don't think that'd stop some simply putting a single cuff on though.

Depends if you struggle, i never got cuffed the only time ive been arrseted.

Even the most mild mannered person can suddenly "flip" when the reality of taking their liberty away i.e. arresting them sinks in. Almost a kind of "fight or flight" situation. There is no requirement to put handcuffs on someone being arrested but it is often seen as the safest method for both the person being arrested and the officers involved.

Ultimately, it is a decision for the cops involved at the time.

As for someone that is unable to be cuffed (like the example above), there is NO way you would put a single cuff on them as this now leaves them with a weapon and you wouldnt hold on or attach the cuff to another person/item due to possibility of injury e.g. the arrestee is stronger than the cop and throws them around/breaks wrist.

You would just restrain them by manual means until a van with a cell in the back turns up and place them in there as opposed to the back of a car. Then have a good few officers available at the station to get them out again in case they kick off.

Has been mentioned by others you have no idea how a person is going to react. Earlier this year we had a local woman pensioner who it took 4 officers to restrain when she flipped.

"Excuse me sir, can you lend me a hand?"

My money would be on ohysical restraint until a van turns up.

Remember the 2 cops who didnt handcuff that american guy, and he pulled a gun in the car and executed them both. Think it was somewhere near london.

West Yorkshire, Leeds. Pc Ian Broadhurst was shot in the chest then executed with a shot to the head. Another officer was shot and wounded and a third officer was saved by the bullet hitting his radio.

David Bieber argued against his whole life term which was held and reduced to 37 years minimum tariff.
