My mate picked my mate up from Stansted Airport (with me in the car) and drove us back home. So 2x return trips from mine to Standsted airport.

Total of both trips together comes roughly to 320 miles...

He wants £80????

Forgive me, but £40 tops in my mind...

Thoughts?

£80 from both of you or £80 between you both?

Also, did your friend (the one being picked up) ask for the lift or did your other friend offer to pick you up?

£80 is more than reasonable. (assuming this is in total???)

It's not just fuel - There is the other factors to consider.

HMRC allowance for reimbursment is 45ppm, which would be £144.

Seems like £80 is a fair deal to me. How much would a taxi or train have been?

That said.... it depends how much of an ass your mate is. I would only ask any mate of mine to cover the fuel - This would be about £48 at around 55mpg for diesel.

*edit* just to add if it was £80 each, which would be less reasonable, then he is acting as an illegal taxi, as you are not allowed to "charge" someone more than the HMRC allowances for giving them a lift unless you have a taxi license.

From me alone.

I asked for the lift for my mate as I don't have a car. They were happy to...

320 motorway miles would be about 3/4 a tank for me, which works out about £65. So £80 seems quite reasonable. Isn't short stay parking at Stanstead a bit of a rip off too?

Wait, so Friend A is at the airport, you ask Friend B to collect him with you in the car, Friend B collects friend A, now friend B wants money from you?

At 30 mpg it will have cost him about £62. If he was a close mate I doubt he would want anything more than fuel cost alone.

Just used an online fuel calculator:

miles: 320
mpg: 30
fuel pence per litre: 129.99 (pretty much the uk average, I would imagine?)

This journey would cost you £63.03.

This. If anything you should pay for his fuel and buy him a beer. 320 miles return is a long way to go to pick someone up from the airport!

£50 won't cover his fuel if he does 30mpg.

Edit: Just seen your location. Reading to Stansted is a massive pain. Pay the man!

why are you paying fuel to take your mate to an airport?

your mate can pay it.

you did him the favour of organising a lift for him.

surely??
