GTX 690/AMD 7990 or two cards?

so heres the thing, my motherboard when running crossfire or SLI runs the PCIe slots at x8 and x8 PCIe 3.0 of course
but if i get a GTX 690 or AMD 7990 i can run it at x16

will this make any difference to performance?
or would it be better to get two seperate cards? ive also been looking at a lot of benchmarks for the 690 and 7990 and it seems like the 7990 suffers from more stuttering than the 690 does although the frame pacing driver update seems to have adressed that somewhat

will the 7990 support mantle? and if anyone asks why i want such high end graphics hardware im running a 1080p 144hz monitor so i want to be able to push frame rates as close to that as possible

You'll see 3-10% by running X16 X16 on PCIE.

I run my 670s at X4 X16 (hacked) and it runs perfectly with no loss in everything I have tried apart from Catzilla. 3DMARK 13 actually performed better /perplexed.

You'll be fine..

Yes the 7990 does support Mantle. It's any AMD GPU with GCN.

The 7990 is the fastest single card on the market atm and does support mantle. My money would be going to the 7990 between those 2.

yeah thats probaly what im going to do still a little worried about crossfire frame times though, high frames are kind of meaningless if its stuttering a lot :/ but it should be fine

the gtx 690 and 7990 arent the only options im considering 2 gtx 760's and GTX 770's come to around the same price as does 2 r9 280x's
but i was thinking 2 cards wouldnt be the best idea seeing as ill only be able to run them at x8 and x8 where i can run a gtx 690 and 7990 at x16

to run 2 cards it would most likely be 2 gtx 760's wich after looking at the benchmarks and the recent price cuts are very attractive but something about having to run them at x8 and x8 makes it seem to me like it wont perform to its fullest
the 760 performs pretty much the same as the 670 so if you say its fine on x16 and x4 then ill guess ill be fine on x8 and x8 :)

still leaning more towards the 7990 simply because of mantle i want to upgrade my graphics now but at the same i want to wait untill mantle is launched on BF4 and see what it really does, and i also wanna see if anymore devs are going to announce anything that will use mantle because as of right now its just BF4 and i probaly wont play BF4 all that much to be honest, kind of lost interest in multiplayer shooters

8x 8x is perfectly fine. In theory it should make no difference to what you are suggesting. while 1 card may have 16x all to its self its still a dual gpu meaning twice the data going through in socket(im sure it does scale perfectly like this but its a rough example) You asking if 16x doing 100% of the graphic load is better than 8x + 8x doing 50% of the combined graphics load each. The rough math would say its the same.

Moved from a 780 to 7990 and it's a great card. No hesitation from me in recommending it, was my first crossfire solution and I can say for the most part it's been a good transition (no frame time/stuttering issues). The only problems I've had is a lack of crossfire in Assassins Creed 3 (not sure who is to blame) and Rome 2 Total war (Creative assembly broke it in Patch 5).

Aside from that would say go for it if you can get one for a good price, I managed to snag mine for £371 in the recent deals (less if I count selling the games).

in the games that dont scale well do you have any performance issues or is it literaly just not scaling so single card performance?

I would go for a 7990 the things a beast my friends running a 780ti And the 7990 blows it away in bf4.
I only paid 371 which was a bargain.
Crossfire is good amd are a lot better than they were a few yrs ago I ain't had any problems lately, there's some good deals out on the 7990 at the min. Its still fastest on the planet..

thanks a lot guys think i will go for the 7990 :)

+1 for the 7990, you would not be disappointed with performance.
Might be worth taking a look at a brand that has an rma centre a bit closer to home should the worst ever happen. There are a few folk reporting coil whine with some brands but no greater ratio than any other card.
Am not a gigabyte rep or owt but I would go with them if the price suited. They are a bit pricier than the others at present and now the 290's and whatnot are out thinning the ozone that bit faster I doubt they will go much lower, though its worth checking daily deals Mr Gibbo might have one more superdeal left you never know.:)

alright so it deffinatly looks like im going for the 7990 :) can anyone that actualy owns one or has owned one tell me what its like with overclocking? i know it varies from card to card just looking for a general idea of how far id be able to push it

also im running an AX 860w PSU, is that enough?

i've not overclocked my 7990 as it's got enough grunt for everything i throw at currently.
running it at stock speeds @ 1.1v and a 3770k at 4.5ghz, all powered by a 650w psu.
your 860w psu will be fine.

How are temps? Tell me about the card in great detail. :)

cool thanks for the info on the PSU :)
only reason i want to overclock it is because atleast according to benchmarks ive looked at its a little slower than having 2 7970's so id just like to make up that difference
