290/X or 7990

If it's for bf4 like you say get a 7990 it's far quicker than a 290x in fact 2 290x in crossfire is only 2 fps faster and one 290x costs more than a 7990 if u shop around.

Loving your faith in Mantle...I hope it is living up to the hype that people have given it.

I'm saying it here and now. Mantle will be the best thing to happen to graphics core next. I expect to be quoted and laughed at if im wrong though. :p

^^^ great to see some results showing the difference with older PCI-E setups.

Good work Kaap.

Makes me happier still being on Socket 1156 that PCI-E 2.0 isn't going to be a problem, more so with a single gpu.

I've got a 7990.

Heat and noise is not an issue, doesnt go over 85c.

Damn impressive bit of kit and I'm not really noticing to many differences from my old sli setup.

Thanks. What SLI setup did you have before the switch?

Battlefield 4 will be the main game. Yes i saw that result as well. Can you link it here? I forgot where i saw it now. That said i think 290X crossfire is very immature at the moment. They're using a new crossfire method and i expect crossfire scaling to improve dramatically with that over time.

But you have a 290X on your choices and by my reckoning, a 780 with the free games sold, makes for a damn site cheaper card over the 290X. That's where the smart money goes over those 2. ;)

Just saying is all, just saying. :p

An API that's shared between hardware in the consoles and pc?

Why wouldn't it. If AMD are smart they will leverage the hell out of their current position. Devs will be optimising for their hardware be default because of the consoles.

670 sli. Don't know why I changed just couldn't resist a bargain and Nvidias drivers really aren't the honey coated rose garden some would have you believe.

Matt it strikes me why you would want to change to a single GPU??

Is it because of the issue you been having with BF4? If so hang in there bud new drivers/mantle soon.

@1080p they is nothing so far I can't run at ultra settings, till some think pushes my system where I need to start lower settings I wouldn't upgrade.

Furry muff. How do you find temps and overclock ability? What is your case cooling like? Do you have any side exhaust fans to remove the two heat zones on the 7990, the core and vrm area?

No mate BF4 is working fine now. See my benchmark scores posted in the BF4 thread. That fix you gave me changed things. For some reason the game never installed those DX files. As soon as i did that it was golden.

I just fancy a change. I would have got a 7990 when i bought my 7950's but that was before the 7990's started going for dirt cheap. It would be a simple solution but now we have 290/X's as well.

I think it might need to be a certain revision, but yep just a BIOS update.

Going straight to water.

Well im running the latest bios already so must be ok. That said not sure i want to upgrade my cpu unless necessary. My cpu overclocks really well. Got it at 4.9ghz on a H100i @1.376v.

i sold my 7990 to get a 290. The 7990 was great, but it seems the end of the road. With the 290/x you can stick another in there in the future. In crysis 3 the performance is not all that different

If you want latest benchmarks for bf4 go to guru3d and click on the 780ti sli bench u can find all results there.

I see what you mean. Its hard to argue with that performance from a stock 950mhz core 7990 tbh. A slight overclock at 1100 and those figures will climb much higher.

However this does reinforce my point from earlier that 290 crossfire is very immature at the moment.

If it was shared between consoles and PC (which it isn't), then it would still only give X amount of performance gains. Nobody is saying exactly what gains.

I have read users saying 30%, which seems a little OTT for me but I would only be guessing. An AMD spokesperson (or could have been Dice) did say that "If it was less than 5%, it wouldn't be worth doing", so expect over 5% performance.

Saved to my notepad :D

So you think bigger gains than 12.11 drivers... I like your style and I love your confidence even more :)

If I was you I would hang in there for next years line up.

Not an option matey. I need a change and i need one now. ;)

Its not just about pure performance, its also image quality as well which drivers will do nothing for. Mantle could allow effects to be dialled up to 11 without the previous unplayable performance hit.

I really think these Hawaii cards are going to be gangbusters when proper coolers come out... not long to wait, especially now that AMD have seen the backlash.

Upgradeitas is a nasty disease that has the awfull side effect of making your wallet much lighter, be strong keep the 7950's, ive thought about selling my 7970's a hundred times but so far ive resisited and plan to keep doing so unless i have a relapse of course
