A friend is building a pc soon, he doesnt want to pay for an OS so he is going to torrent one, i am trying to convince him to buy the genuine version but i have no idea what the advantages of the genuine Win 7 over a torrented one, any ideas? Thanks in advance

No links or requests for "warez"
Providing or asking for information regarding "warez", "gamez" or any other software protected by copyright is forbidden. This includes discussion of 'chipped' or modified games consoles.

I`m pretty sure that covers "PIRACY". So not really a subject we can talk about

It's legal! I would say the OS is the one thing that needs to run properly and smoothly. I would never chance a dodgy copy of an OS because it could impact greatly on the performance of the system.

How good is he with computers? Just tell him it will run at 1/2 the speed!! That will change his mind!

If he d/l's a pirate copy, a balrog surfaces from the depths of hell, and in the ensuing epic battle with Gandalf some damage to components may occur.

Most Linux distros are available as torrents, if it's one of them congratulate him!

Windows 7? It probably won't activate, or get updates, and he'll have to constantly be vigilant that it doesn't try to "phone home".

Downloading a copy of Windows via torrent is`nt illegal(just check the hash number, to make sure it is a genuine copy), if you use a legitimate key to activate it, once it`s installed.
But using other methods(which I wont mention) to activate is illegal(Piracy) but they do work, updates and all.
But tbh, it`s not worth it. A quick Google and a Windows 7 key can be had for next to nothing.

Can stop SLI from working properly as a friend of mine recently found out, he was using a cracked version temporarily as he hadn't got his product key with him, but SLI wouldn't work.

Frequent updates and peace of mind is what swayes me.

This.

I used to only use pirated versions on my pcs and laptops until I bought my current one... best money I've spent in ages, being able to reformat on a whim without the pain of having to crack and ******** around... and then of course the worry/chore of making sure that the CD is burnt properly bla bla bla.
