3rd party 780Ti reviews

Seemingly Anandtech stated the 780ti was faster using the 290 QUIET mode numbers and did a bad job of it. Across all results and resolutions Anandtechs numbers vs the 290 in Uber mode, put the 290Uber 1% faster than the 780ti, 17% faster, pull the other one. If you take 3 Nvidia games at a specific res, maybe, across multiple games and multiple resolutions there is barely anything in it.

The 780Ti is 2% faster stock Vs stock and with a decent factory OC, it is easily doable to make an 18% (not 17%) faster card than a 290X. I will dig out some performance charts to show the gains of an overclocked 780Ti if I can find a few.

Hopefully we'll start seeing them in the benchmarking threads, really see what they can do then.

Agreed. Very disappointed to only see one so far :(

We must remeber the 290/x has not had its full potential realised yet, particularly with referece cooler attached so just wait a couple of weeks for a back to back of 290x verse ti to see whats what. The 780ti is a marvellous card at an extortionate price imo. If it were 500 notes to buy i'd be a fan, but its over priced and relatively pound per frame under performs in raw value terms.

Even with all cores activated and higher clock speeds the "stock 780 cooler" still tames the TI's heat and noise better than the opposition.

The "stock 780 cooler" was just a Titan cooler on a cooler running card though wasn't it? so it's not like it's being asked to do anything amazingly harder than what it originally was.

I'm not trying to make excuses for the 290X using a HD7970 cooler, just saying.

Sound pressure is doubled every 3db IIRC but actual volume you can perceive doubles every 10db, so 2db is actually a very minor increase. AS for a 780ti being 17% faster than a 290x in uber mode... errm, BS.

AS for how good the cooler is, that picture suggests very simply that a 780gtx is much quieter than a 780ti is. The 290x outperforms the 780gtx EASILY, it about matches the 780ti, the 780ti is 6db louder than the 780 non ti with the same cooler.

The 780ti uses more power and almost the same as the 290x uses. The 780ti is 26% larger than the 290x making cooling the later significantly harder. Yet the difference in sound between the 780 ti and non ti is 3 times the size as the difference between the 780ti and 290x.

The non reference 780ti cooler runs quieter, yet is overclocked a decent whack, it's 15% faster and quieter....... that suggests the stock 780ti cooler is as insufficient as the 290x cooler, nothing else.

I would like to see what clock speed the 780 TI clocked its self upto, looks pretty high as it 15% faster than the ref- one.

Its not a fair comparison to the 290X as even with an AIB cooler it would still only run at ~1000Mhz unless its a factory overclock, and we all know the 290X might not even be running at 1000Mhz with the ref- cooler.

Difference is he using the STOCK numbers of a stock 780ti which is under 2db's quieter than the 290x to say it's THAT much better and the stock cooler is brilliant. That's rubbish, it's a stock card that is within a couple of percent of a 290x. The 39db card there is a 15% faster card than the stock 780ti and that is with a third party cooler. He is saying this is proof of how good the stock cooler is.

That graph actually shows with only 40W more power or so the same cooler goes up by 6db's which is pretty huge, it also shows a third party cooler running 15% faster can run 2db quieter. This only shows the stock cooler is no where near as good as people are saying and not in any way significantly better than the 290x card.

I have no problem people saying an overclocked 780ti is great, I have no problem saying the 780ti stock cooler is good, it is. But using a third party cooler running cooler while 15% faster than the stock cooler is proof the stock cooler is brilliant compared to the AMD cooler, or that the AMD cooler is terrible, is completely incorrect and I will call it.

The AMD cooler is far better than people think, largely because people are vastly overstating how good the stock cooler is. People are acting as if there is never any throttling and unlimited overclocking while very quiet is easy on the stock 780gtx cooler, and the fact the AMD cooler can't do this means it's terrible. It's just rubbish, they are both good coolers, they aren't great, they don't need to be great, a dual slot cooler with a blower fan will never, ever come close to a triple slot cooler with twice the surface area and two "proper" fans. i've said that for the past 6-7 years, as long as blower fans have been the in thing to have. They suck for the most part, the 780 ti cooler doesn't come close to matching the EVGA custom cooler, and the EVGA custom cooler is fairly basic, two slim fans and a fairly slimline card... as far as blower coolers go both cards are decent, but blower cools are WOEFUL in every way against a triple slot card with a couple proper fans. You're talking 5cfm on a blower fan in quiet mode, and 25cfm + in a "proper" fan, even a slim fan, and still silently.

A blower based cooler will never come close, a good blower cooler will offer quiet operation and give good gpu performance, nothing more or less. The very fact that a simple third party cooler can be quieter while that much faster is direct proof that the stock cooler isn't great.

The noise level graph is interesting, quite funny actually with all the nvidia fanboys ripping in to the 290x because of the noise over the last few weeks.

I guess nvidia were jealous and wanted a jet engine of thier own, except they are charging for the rest of the rocket on top.

How much heat do these things put out? nvidia might be able to compete in the space heater market with amd over the winter.

I agree, I think if the 290 / 290x with aftermarket coolers come anywhere close to the Ti then Nvidia is in trouble when you compare the fact you get similar performance and more VRAM for much less cost!

Interesting times ahead...

This is true but at present, we have a 780Ti that has not had its full potential realised yet also. I did some math (that I am seriously bad at) for comparison as we stand now. Both new and both on immature drivers.

Going from the stock Vs stock results on the Techpower up site and using the full HD results, it stands as this:

Assassins Creed 3 = 780Ti wins by 17%
BF3 = 780Ti wins by 11%
BioShock Infinite = 780Ti wins by 18%
Black Ops 2 = 780Ti wins by 23%
Call of Juarez = 780Ti wins by 5%
Crysis 3 = 780Ti wins by 11%
Diablo 3 = 780Ti wins by 21%
FarCry 3 = 780Ti wins by 14%
Grid 2 = 780Ti wins by 7%
MetroLL = 780Ti wins by 10%
Splinter cell: Blacklist = 780Ti wins by 37%
Sleeping dogs = 290X wins by 10%
Hitman Absolution = 290X wins by 1%

You can clearly see the 780Ti is winning and by quite a margin. The 780Ti is faster in 11 of the 13 games tested and when added together, they result in 12.5% faster.

Now when you add an overclocked 780Ti into the equasion, does 18% seem doable over the stock 290X? I would say easily. Of course there will be overclocked editions of the 290X as well, so maybe an unfair bench comparison however, the 780Ti IS 12.5% faster overall in the majority of games and so many of those games benched are AMD Gaming Evolved titles. Does it justify the extra £100 price premium? 3 free games and that original £100 comes down a fair chunk cheaper still.

Hey... wait a minute, the ref- 780Ti is just about the same noise level as the R9 290X.

So if the 290X is "noisy" then so is the 780TI, right?

Noooooo its really quiet.....

Edit. its 7% faster overall.

Nvidia really have this gen sewn up. Faster, elegant design, quieter and cooler. No wonder they can charge an arm and a leg compared to budget rivals AMD. I've been a long time fan of AMD due in part to their price/performance ratio but Nvidia are clearly the winners this time round

Your logic is undeniable :rolleyes:

Exactly it for me.

I could have gone into depth about db differences, but didn't have the time.

As I say, 2db isn't _that_ much considering the huge flaming the card gets :)

No problem,

feel free to post any benchmark scores you have in some of the benchmarking threads.

Sadly I don't own a Ti or a decent processor. But my 3dmark score is already in the bench thread, it was the only one I got around to doing. I won't be breaking any records anytime soon.

My current system will stay as it is until Intel release a true 8 core processor which I will definitely buy along with SLI or Xfire. I see no reason to upgrade until then

Edit: Just had a quick peek and it seems most of the bench threads are still dominated by Nvidia?

Using 1600P

Assassins Creed 3 = 780Ti wins by 5%
BF3 = 780Ti wins by 5%
BioShock Infinite = 780Ti wins by 11%
Black Ops 2 = 780Ti wins by 16%
Call of Juarez = 780Ti wins by 1% (nothing)
Crysis 3 = 780Ti wins by 1% (nothing)
Diablo 3 = 780Ti wins by 16%
FarCry 3 = 780Ti wins by 11%
Grid 2 = 780Ti wins by 2% (nothing)
Hitman Absolution = 780TI wins by 10%
Splinter cell: Blacklist = 780Ti wins by 10%
MetroLL = 780Ti wins by 1% (Nothing)
Sleeping dogs = 780TI wins by 1% (Nothing)
Splinter cell: Blacklist = 780Ti wins by 36%

There is no question the 780TI wins half the games @ 1600P, but only by an average of about 8%

The only place you will see the difference at 1600P is in your wallet, and they make the same amount of noise.

The 780ti is far more mature in terms of its constituents than the 290x, it is afterall a gaming Titan effectively with faster vram and the same 384 bit bus running a slight core bump. It also uses the titan cooler, it has a larger foot print to allow more heat dispersion, it has a greater transistor count and cost a 160 more.

The 3 free games mean nothing to most people its just a gimmick to give the perception of value. AMD were giving 3 top AAA titles away with 180 pound cards for heavens sack its got little real value.

The 290x has been thermally castrated by AMD probably for marketing reasons and when the partner boards are released with 7000Mhz+ vram modules and effective cooling to sustain the Oc's then things will be better understood.

I've never owned an AMD gpu that does not overclock by 20-30%. The post from 290x user above says hes reaching 1150 which is a 15% OC at 85oC, this kinda hints at the potential that is left if the thermals come down.

Anyhow if Nvidia really want to compete the price point would be 500, which factors in the better cooler and use of a Gk110. But no they persist to rip the arse out of their customers and the continue to milk the market just like intel...
