In the seven years since the introduction of the PlayStation 3, we've seen our gaming consoles transform into living room hubs through constant evolution and software updates. Those updates weren’t always smooth – though on PS3, they were always happening – but it’s easy to see just how far the platform has come.

Meanwhile, the designers of the PlayStation 4 were taking notes and designing a console that, feature by feature, sought to address the failings of its predecessor. The PS3 was notoriously difficult to program for, thanks to its proprietary silicon. So the PS4 was built to be developer friendly, with a familiar, PC-like architecture. The PS3 was announced with a bizarre, boomerang-shaped controller, launched with the rumble-free Sixaxis controller before settling into the never-great DualShock 3 controller. So the PS4 comes with the DualShock 4, inarguably the best controller Sony's ever made. And the PS3 launched at an abnormally high price point, costing $200 more than its competition. So the PS4 carries a far more aggressive price, asking $100 less than the competition this time around.

I don't really understand why they've felt compelled to assign a score. It feels more like they're scoring the PS4 launch rather than the hardware, on the basis that they omitted a lot of details about the hardware itself anyway. Bizarre.

But then, I do find I have a love/hate relationship with Polygon (and The Verge, their sister site). Their design and layouts are superb and their editorial articles are good, but when it comes to reviews and coverage they're all over the place, often biased and end up adding to their news articles after posting them because they've left out huge chunks of information or just failed to do basic research until someone points it out. Doesn't help that their respective communities are all fanboys of some brand or device or whatever it may be at the time.

Thought the first review deserved it's own thread away from the usual bickering in the main thread :p

Not sure why that guy ^^ is saying it was negative, they said the PS4 control pad was the best Sony ever made, along with the PS4 addressing all of the PS3's major faults. I'm not sure what more you guys want, reviewers to worship the PlayStation?

Putting a score on a console is pretty pointless in my eyes - thought I do like a few things about the Xbox One interface better than the PS4. Ultimately the power of the console will only be realised during its full lifespan

The first review from a site that tends to be pro Microsoft and who got funded by Microsoft to the tune of $750,000 to create a documentary, I think I'll pass.

Some points..

Best control pad Sony ever made.
PS3 faults addressed with PS4, things like updates, easier to develop for.
Early PS4 new functionality good idea but currently not perfectly implemented (Will improve over time)
Better games to come later on (Obvious statement)

That wasn't negative at all, they just basically said great potential, excellent control pad, cool new functionality that's not perfect 'right now'. No killer app (Game) just yet but will come later.

Remember it's a console not your girlfriend, people way to sensitive over this stuff..

Me?

I just ignore Polygon as a rule due to their clear bias. They were funded $700,000 by Microsoft and notoriously under rate anything exclusive to Sony.

There is no need for a score on a console, what would give a 10?

However I agree on the lack of software. Same old Sony of recent, lacking a killer app at launch.

Yeh it wasn't overly negative or positive. It's just weird they gave it a score, how do you score a console that isn't even out yet? Doesn't make sense really.

I suspect it's so they can now review the XB1 and give it a 10, but we shall see.

Agreed, but it generates web hits, lot's of interest in the PS4 right now. Early reviews will be huge web hit generators lol. I think this review looked good for Sony, great potential but no killer app just yet, fair enough. I agree, the upcoming games don't have that 'next gen' must have appeal just yet. They will come, hopefully sooner rather than later. I imagine whatever Naughty Dog do next will be amazing, the last Of Us was stunning, imagine what they can achieve with the PS4..

I thought it made some good points, I agree the control is VASTLY improved but I also agree the 2 middle buttons weren't naturally placed when I tried out the pad and the touchpad was a bit meh but that's more about software usage.

I also agree it doesn't have any games that make me want the system yet, even though PSN seems to have fixed the major issues I had with it during the PS3 era, (joining GT5 games will forever remind me what a half assed system Sony created compared to live)

To me its a purchase for the future not now, but I'm sure that makes me a MS fanboi.

By Easter next year I will be thinking of getting a PS4 by xmas next year I will have one, probably before that cause I'm weak willed.

Just because they didn't rate it 10/10 doesn't mean they are biased. Seemed a pretty even handed well thought out review to me with some well deserved praise as well as a few concerns, mainly around lack of AAA titles and an over reliance on "indie" titles which seem to have not come through. Inevitably I suppose some will think independent press reviews not sucking up to Sony with a 9+/10 must have been bribed by MS to produce false reviews. You were inferring that they have been bribed by MS to under rate anything by Sony weren't you?

I'm not implying, im outright stating that polygon accepted a massive ammount of money from Microsoft and because of this they rate Sony exclusives way lower than every other site. I'm not the only one that thinks this too, just type 'polygon microsoft' into google and two of the suggestions are 'bias' and 'money'

Complete that search to see many people on many sites calling them out on it.
