**XBOX ONE** Official Thread

Cos for the last 12 yrs, Sony have allowed their console to stand vertically. And for those who have a certain space requirement, which probably runs into the millions upon millions, especially in Japan where space in your living room is a huge issue, then its not so silly is it. ;)

Oh I can definitely see how having it stand vertically is a space saver, my 360 currently stands vertical, but saying its a stupid design is just ludicrous. If anything having something that heavy standing vertical leaves it more prone to being knocked over and therefore damaging it.

Thought that was skynow?

Are they not two different types of apps. One needs the skybox plugged in to the xbox1.

I think you've got this completely mixed up
Theres a NowTV app which is coming out next year for the Xbox One (NowTV is a subscription service offered by sky for there channels)
Then theres a SkyGo app which is on the 360 but hasn't been announced for the Xbox One
Then theres the ability to plug your sky set top box into the Xbox One via HDMI which doesn't require any app just a sky box

I thought nothing sky related would work until next summer? Of course plugging the sky box in will work day one but having the xbox control the box wont and there wont be an overlay guide.

You know Sony dont make the Xbox One dont you? :p

The design is fine, I prefer my boxes horizontally rather than vertical.

Think i'll make a list of my games tonight and do some trade ins tomorrow.
Also have an iPad and 3DS XL to trade in...

If you are going to put it vertical make sure you haven't got a game in it and turned on and then move from horizontal to vertical, may have made that mistake when I got the halo 4 xbox D:

The erm.....credit for online that you can spend on the Xbox One, is it available in store at game right now? I think if I brought in my 3ds XL and about 4 recent Nintendo games including Animal crossing and Pokemon I hope I might cover the cost of a few launch games but I want to go digital. They do 20% extra credit when trading in 4 games I think. They did also have 25% extra when you trade against digital money.

Anyone else slightly underwhelmed by the PS4?

Nice specs and all that but not really that different functionality than the PS3 and actually worse in some cases and a very disappointing launch line up whilst Xbox One at least tries to be different to its predecessor and has a much better launch line up, yes specs slightly worse but functionality much better and trying something new with launching with Kinect included so games developers know everyone has it so can put some very useful features in games in years to come, love the voice control and snap functionality, consoles are more entertainment devices today as well as games machines something Sony has forgot which is strange since the PS3 did it so well.

It's the same currency as the 360 so GAME should have plenty mate :)

Xbone won't support 3d bluray playback at launch! Not surprisingly ps4 will.

Shambles.

3D is basic bluray functionality though - MS should put the launch back 6 months IMO rather than launch what is amounting to Xbox360.2.

DLNA not being on the PS4 is an oversight but NOT one of many.
Interestingly Sony have now confirmed PS4 doesn't support 3D Bluray at launch either (even post day one update), or MP3, CD Audio, DLNA...

You must be feeling a bit silly right about now I'd imagine ;) :D :p

As an aside it seems a little odd neither console will support 3D Blu-ray playback, it can't be a licensing otherwise Sony would have it covered for PS4 so there must be some fundamentally funky tech reason it's been difficult to implement. If a £80 Blu-ray player can do it you'd have thought £400 consoles could. Maybe just a low priority in the crunch for release, which probably says something about the sales and perceived market for 3D Blu-ray movies at home.

Yeah, just posted this in the PS4 thread and sums up how I feel about it.

The downside to Sony focusing so much more on being a games console rather than XB1's media center approach is that until some great games arrive it feels a bit like having a supercar but only being allowed to fetch the groceries.

I feel with the XB1 that is has a bit more substance right now and that makes it a better choice for a launch console. Give it a year and I reckon the PS4 will have a wider choice of games (whether they'll be better who knows) but for now the XB1 is more exciting and that's what I want from a new toy!

As time goes on it'll be interesting to see if MS gamble to build on gaming and then "own" the living room with a lot more "stuff" pays off. PS4 is more powerful as a console but that is a relatively limited market, the living room AV market dwarfs it. Sure, if you have a console in your bed room you're unlikely to be worried about the TV/AV stuff but there's a significant market that could. personally I just find what XO is trying to do more interesting and a little bit different, for me it wins the small amount of space going available under the living room TV.

If MS get this right the comparable market size could mean once we get past the dedicated console gamers sales (which will run for the first 3-6 months I suppose) XO has an opportunity to out sell PS4 substantially, in effect scooping up the traditional 360 & Wii market as well as people looking for an easy all round gaming and AV solution.

It's an interesting gamble, if it pays off and XO wins a much bigger market over a year or two it stands the chance of becoming the defacto platform devs code for due to potential sales despite PS4s early focus on being a pure gaming console.

All guess work but I can see how it might pay off longer term. Bizarrely it just occurred to me that as it has IE11 built in you could actually use XO to edit Powerpoint/Word and Excel docs through the outlook.com Office 2013 web apps! (No, I have no idea why anyone would want to either :D )

I've given up on my chances of snagging a launch day one now, I've been hoping a random few would still pop up somewhere but I can't wait any longer, I will make a pre-order tomorrow and at least I will get it before Christmas :S

I would say XO could deffo win over a lot of AV people with that kind of TV integration for your system would be a pretty cool thing to have.

I'd have thought you would be able to find one on release day in store somewhere like Tesco maybe?

It was my plan to try that approach, if I'm unlucky though I will miss out and then pre-xmas delivery might even be an issue, I've noticed a couple of places listing availability as jan-feb already :o
