going green

Surely thats staying red, not going green :D

I have that HIS card and its been excellent. What res do you play at? I'd have thought your crossfire would have been a bit quicker.

Lol
1080, the cards have been brilliant no problems at all, they have both got full cover blocks so run nice and cool. Just thinking of the power draw :(

The games I play are :-
Bf3 & 4
Crysis 3
Bioshock infinite
Call of duty ghost

Mate seriously, without doing a full calculation the difference in running the two 7950s over one 290X will equate to around (very roughly) £50-60 extra a year assuming you're running them 24/7.

Running them for a more normal amount of time will end up costing you about £10-15 extra a year over a 290X I'd say if not less...

Also, you're going to have lower FPS with 1 290X over your 7950s. :)

If you want to save power drop to a single 7950, drop your settings in game a little and overclock your 7950 to a reasonable clock speed of around 1050/1450. Jobs a good 'en ;).

No worries. The 290Xs are actually quite power hungry so the difference might be less :).

As I said, not done the calculations but it doesn't equate to much money per month either way for your average gamer :).

Power draw is pennies matey, I pull 500-550w from the wall on my PC while heavy gaming.

I'm on 12p per KwH so it's around 6p per hour to run my PC when I'm doing heavy gaming.

Taking one of 7950's out of the picture might lower it to like 4p an hour..... so not worth it.

And if it's a older game I'm playing it can drop to 450w power draw from the wall.

6p per hour x 4hrs per day = 24p per day = £1,68 per week

4p per hour x4hrs per day = 16p per day = £1.12 per week

Not worth it for just over 50p per week, you'll loose more then that by the second price of your cards.

Electric bills we all love them. I dont belive you would save enougth to justify the cost of the new card. However if its a ruse to justify the new card to the mrs then its really worth it

Ugh my PC is plugged into an extension lead now so it's more difficult to monitor my wattage as I've got a homeplug running out the the next socket so don't have enough for my monitors, wireless extension router (for upstairs) and miscellaneous sexual toy.

:D :D :D

I have visions of you saddling a double intruder.

Guys what are you talking about?

2 7950s overclocked will burn no more than 450W together at FULL LOAD. A single 780 will burn around the same when overclocked at FULL LOAD. And a 290X bit more.

Changing hardware to cut energy bills is insane, if you do not switch to an APU and forget gaming and discreet graphic card. And still what you benefit is pennies. (and the financial hit even bigger for the loses).

@cobbly123 tell to your wife to unplug the TV and not put it on standby for the hours she do not watch. At least you burn the electricity when you use the PC. Not when is on "standby". And not put the central heating more than 15C. (the last will save you money and give you a good solid point to your argument)

My thought was not to put all the bloomin flashing christmas lights up this year

Cheers everyone, I dont want to change anything ( well maybe a new cpu after crimbo )

I changed from an overclocked 480 to 2x670's and they barely draw anymore power :D

Yet give about 4x the performance! Now that's an efficiency improvement.

But yeh OP if you are doing it simply because of power...it isn't worth it.
