BBC said:
Police are investigating a complaint about a mural at an Edinburgh primary school which features a golliwog.

The scene from Alice in Wonderland in Wardie Primary's assembly hall dates back to 1936 and was recently restored with a Heritage Lottery Fund.

Is it just me or is this pushing it a bit far? This was painted back in a time when attitudes and sensitivities were different. From what I can gather, those dolls were much loved and cherished by children at the time.

I wonder what would be proposed to fix it... a big "CENSORED" over the offending part? I presume all historical artwork will be reviewed and corrected where necessary as well? :p

the article calls it a "hate incident"???

its all because a moronic parent has complained about racism....

maybe if people were better educated.....

I agree. People in this day and age seem far too PC for my liking. Too eager to pull the 'INSERT BIGOTRY HERE' card at every opportunity.

We can not run around erasing history at every turn just because we find it offensive. In fact I believe the reverse is true. We should preserve history in order not to make the same mistakes again.

I know it was a Gollywog, but why censor it ? Seems better to leave it there and let the children know what it is and why it's not so acceptabl today as it was when the mural was painted.

Can't even see what's so inherantly racist about it, I mean in 1936 brothers were probably just happy to be included in the white guys painting.

You know who complained about this ****? A white middle class woman. I would bet my balls on it.

^^

Beaten to it. The article doesn't say but I do wonder if the person complaining is white and of a certain political orientation and social class.

It amused me the author that the BBC chose on Breakfast this morning to discuss this story:

I was told some 20-odd years ago that a gollywog is considered racist. I know it's black, but any idea why it's actually racist?

There is that recent Disney film called The Princess & Frog, and the heroine from that is called Tiana. Surely you can get action figures for that. Is that racist? Are action figures of Mr T racist?

:-)

No because she's been seen in a positive light, a strong independent woman who at the end opens her own business

but was it originally or was it first heard of from the womans books?

There's a wiki page on it.

Basically says the following:

*** in the UK is usually regarded as a racially offensive slang word referring to a dark-skinned or olive-skinned person from Africa or Asia and, therefore, it is not generally used. It can be applied to any darker-skinned people, but is used generally to refer to peoples of the East Indies and India, as well as immigrants from the Middle-East and Mediterranean. Most dictionaries refer to the word as derogatory and offensive.

Can someone explain to me why a gollywog is racist?

Does any black people take offence to it?

It's a kids toy, that I can imagine was loved by loads of kids. How in anyway can that be remotely racist? The mind boggles.

If it was white but called a gollywog would it be racist?
