Hatton Gardens - Diamond Rings

Just my 2p worth

Getting a Moissanite ring is fine if she knows what it is (looks 95% as good for a fraction of the cost).
If she wants a diamond, do not give her a lie for your engagement.
As other have said A second hand stone (or even a virgin stone) set in a modern ring is a better option as it's unique to her.

Bare in mind I couldn't afford to get my wife a diamond engagement ring 15 years ago.
I got her a second hand twin emerald / white gold ring (currently worth £4-500) but I brought it for £25 - the seller thought it was costume jewellery.
I have since asked if she like it remade in platinum to match her wedding ring, but her view was it will not be 'the' ring any more and said no.

Our wedding rings are platinum made to my design by a local jeweler for £300 and £450
They are similar to 3mm and 5mm super heavy rings and worth more combined than my car

Once she has it, it being 'the' ring is the most important thing (or at least it should be). My wife had her engagement ring stolen. We had it fully insured so money wasn't a concern, but she lost several nights sleep over it.

With regards to the size, bigger may be better, but it's also less practical. Also the setting can influence how big the diamond looks - having it set deeply into the ring will make it look smaller than one raised out of the setting.

We actually shopped for the ring together, but we were more concerned about getting the right overall ring than having the biggest diamond we could afford.

another thing to remember, a huge stone can also look a bit chavvy (depending on the size of her hands).

My mrs is quite petite, and after careful consideration I went for a 0.25 carat but of excellent quality (I think everything on the grading scale was perfect). It cost a pretty penny, but my god does it look classy. Really fits her hand well.

like this one, but my mrs hands are even smaller

Hope you enjoy working overtime OP so your wife to be can have a blood diamond.

What's hilarious is that diamonds aren't rare at all. In fact there is more diamond in the world than silver. de Beers created the whole "diamonds are forever" crap and everyone bought into it.

that is a nonsense.... gem quality diamonds are that rare and even more so if they are over 1ct.

But how many people go for those? Most people will go for any diamond because they think diamonds are rare. And that's where the money is. When in reality diamonds, per se, are extremely common.

And why should proof of your love carry a thousand pound cost?

To maintain the perception that diamonds were rare, De Beers not only significantly limited how many diamonds they mined each year, but also literally started buying up all the other diamonds and just stockpiling them (along with their own excess supply). Combined with a decades-long advertising campaign, they created a perception out of thin air that diamonds were rare and valuable, and that you had to drop thousands of dollars on one to prove you loved your spouse.

its not proof of anything, other than you are engaged.

do you like seeing the ring you bought on your other half's finger?

Surely the engagement should be about love and not about the size of the ring? Are you sure she said "the bigger the better" and not "the most expensive the better?" With just a 2k budget I can't see why massionaite is an issue unless she wants your £££.

You're making the assumption that cost is directly proportionate to rarity, which is a fallacy. Cost is directly proportionate to the value that people put on an item, which can be derived from countless other factors than supply.

LOL Lysander you sound like my dad the penny pinching oxygen thief that he is. Never ever bought my mum a diamond ring even though she only wanted a small one. So on her 50th bday me and my brothers pooled our money together and got her a nice massive diamond ring...much to the annoyance of my dad but then he isnt married to my mum anymore so we told him to go and do one.

I went to Hatton gardens, saw a couple of rings that my missus wanted...went to a jeweller that i know personally...got the exact same ring done for half the price and the diamond we bought was near enough flawless...even proved it to us when we had the ring done from him. £5000 ring in hatton gardens cost me about £1500, mates rates :D

Are there any recommended places for buying loose/second hand diamonds?

I am looking at an approx budget of £10k, and I want to squeeze the most I can for my money!
