I decided on a whim to update my windows 8 laptop to 8.1, but regret doing so.

I'm now experiencing a noticeable slowdown in how it functions, and I'm getting weird blotches on my internet browsers (parts of the page go a solid white/black which stays for a random period of time).

Anyone got any ideas on how to fix this?

Thank you.

:o

Thought that it would have been done automatically. Guess I better go check them!

edit: nothing seems to be needed to be updated (from device manager --> right click --> check for updates

Be worth going to your manufactures site for the board, mine didn't appear to need any when I did it the above way but going to their site listed a full set of 8.1 drivers to install.

I went to the Asus website and it had some stuff for 8.1 (graphics + driver). Installed but no real difference.

Maybe the PC needs a format and a fresh start? (Not that I can as I have nowhere to put my stuff..)

you obviously don't value anything kept on your computer then? :/

not having a backup is complete madness. it's not just the risk of online nasties but random hardware failure as well.

I've got a dropbox and a skydrive account for all my documents. I'm talking about the non essential stuff like iso's/films/etc that are not difficult to reacquire, but are a pain to download on a 1mb line! :(

how much free space do you have? if you had plenty, you could shrink your OS partition to make room for a data partition. stick all your stuff on there and it would allow you to format the OS partition. ideally you'd like to have a backup but i've used the shrink feature of disk management in windows numerous times with no problems.

Ive just tried it and made the jump from 7, it's shocking. Not one that minds change and progress but half the things in it are utterly nonsensical. Performance was also poor and I noticed blurry text too. Back to 7...

That sounds like something I'll definitely botch up. Thanks for the suggestion though. :)

It's terrible, a real step back in my opinion (been using win 8 since Feb), performance is not better and it's just no good for non touch devices.

I would go back to 7 if I could. :(

totally agree. got loads of tablets and gadgets in work (designer) so used the surface quite a bit to test stuff and its nice on there, makes sense. on a desktop though it's just really hard work. it's a shame as the UI is nice enough and the typography is lovely, just doesnt work at all for me
