Have I got a really poor chip?

My 4770k does 4.4Ghz @ 1.315v and 4.5 @ 1.38.

I'm pretty disappointed and am thinking about selling and getting a new one.

Is my chip poor? Am I lickly to get better if I buy a new one?

Nope, I've spent plenty of time tweaking voltages. That is the best I'm getting.

Seems a lot worse than others I've read about.

I'm just worried that there are a lot of worse chips than mine about and that mine is in fact average, which means if I get a new one I've only a 50:50 chance of an improvement.
 
What's it's default vcore? I had a 4770k with a default of 1.19v - would barely do 4.3ghz.

OEM or retail? It looks like a lot of retailrs that also build OC'd systems are binning the bad OEM chips for resale and cherry picking the good ones for thier own builds.
 
Don't know the default vcore off the top of my head. 1.07?

Mine was retail. But good advice r.e overclock retailers. I'll make sure I get another retail one.

Better than mine, i need about 1.37v for 4.4 stable
 
Luck of the draw if you get a decent clocker. Mine was bought secondhand and supposedly capable of 4.6ghz on 1.2500 vcore. Unfortunately though it needs 1.2625 for 4.5ghz, and runs very hot when stress tested. Might still delid it, or if the opportunity to purchase a proven clocker comes up i might go that route.
 
As long as your temps are ok (around the 60 s for gaming)
Those volts are ok (my ivy does 1.3v @ 4.4 for the last year)
Dont worry about others that tell you about lower voltages, i think yours are about average so save your money
like mine 4.4ghz seems to be about the sweet spot for your chip

You can see if a CPU has been installed as it marks the IHS. OEM CPUs should NOT have been tested prior to sale unless sold as "A-grade" or something.

If you use electrical tape on the edge of the cpu you can mount it in the socket without marking the chip.

I bought one recently that was pretty much the same. I couldn't even get 4.4 stable under 1.36v.

Even with the uncore underclocked as some had suggested, it just didn't like anything > 4.3.

Do you know your batch number and where it was manufactured? Mine was a costa rica, 3325B505

Couple of things. I'm not worried about the voltage being too high, but I would have liked to get 4.7-5Ghz for about 1.4v. Feels like I should get better for the voltage i'm using.

Also I have bought all the necessary bits to de-lid, (naked ivy kit & liquid metal), however I was thinking about trying to get a better chip before de-lidding.

Do people think I am wasting my time and should just smash the top off this chip on the weekend?
 
I think your ok with 4.4ghz-4.5ghz tbh,

and I would only delid a good clocking/low voltage cpu if I were you(upto you if you've bought the bits already) get some practise in?
 
That is sort of why I was holding off.

But was hoping perhaps I could squeeze 4.6 if I went to over 1.4v. That voltage would require a de-lid however.
 
Just to highlight the silicon lottery, I got rid of my duff haswell ordered a new one from ocuk. Just opened it up an hour ago, installed it, and it's a beauty, default vcore 1.08, and straight away up at 4.5 stable @ 1.26v.

*Shrug* silly there's such differences my new one for reference is a Costa Rica 3333C023 - newer batchc than the previous one I had.

FS i just started a thread on this but i missed your post. I have a 3323A543 costa rica here i never tested yet. Default volts should be under 1.08 then? I might just not even bother opening this one lol.

I don't really know, I suspect it is truly a lottery. I mean if it's less than 1.15 you should be able to get 4.4. More than that and I suspect it's going to be tough work.

My original one when you set optimized defaults and booted it would be at turbo 3.9 and sucking down 1.19v. And I could never get it stable at anything > 4.3ghz despite throwing some volts at it.

The new one when I first booted it, set optimized defaults it was 3.9 @ 1.08v so I suspect it gives you an idea of the headroom of the chip.

Right now this new one is at 1.28 4.6 prime 95ing stable (80 deg) and I'm very happy to leave it there after my last chip!
 
Running nearly 1.4v for x45 is defo one of the poorer chips from what i've seen. Glad you got it changed for a better one.
