Domino's Pizza store tells staff 'speak English'

However in a menial position such things can be overlooked in the hiring process still leaving it perfectly reasonable for them to speak Bulgarian while sorting out the task between them.

Well I doubt anyone would mind them speaking Bulgarian if it was just the two of them in the room, but if there was a non-Bulgarian speaker with them then it's pretty easy to see how they might feel excluded at the very least. It divides people.

I'm sorry I thought we were discussing a mandated work ruling not a flexible work around for colleagues paranoia.

socially I expect they'll pick up English over the years.

Unlikely if they insist on only speaking Bulgarian ;)

Lets face it, when you move to a new country, chances are your only contacts will be family (who will probably speak your native language) and work colleagues.

If you're not going to speak the local language to your work colleagues, who are you going to speak it to?

Er, yes, I was presuming they also had a social life mixing with English speakers, I would find it almost impossible to learn another language and don't require other folk do so as a mealy mouthed way of restricting immigration.

You seem to have missed the point. It's not necessarily paranoia, speaking a different language excludes and divides people.

As someone who's worked in small businesses that has more asians than non-asians how is one meant to participate in conversations or be social when they are all chittering in their native language and you are sat there like a numpty. It's common decency to speak in the native language of the country you live in.

I think they should have to speak english seeing as they are in england and they are in a shop. By all means talk to customers who share their language in that language but don't do it in the shop

I don't see the problem with allowing people to speak the language they're most comfortable with.

I would expect a similar courtesy if I was in Spain or France etc and people spoke to me, I'd prefer English thanks ;)

Just because they were speaking to themselves in another language other than English it doesn't mean they don't have a good understanding of English.

Sure, I can accept it's a little rude maybe if you have people around you that doesn't - but so what? If you have a problem with it chat to the people about it. It all seems a little petty to me.

This thread just reminds me of the tv program "The chicken shop" in one of the episodes 2 of the women were stood behind the counter and a guy walks in they just turned to each other and started insulting him in whichever language it was they spoke and we had lovely subtitles to read.
So for all you paranoid people, THE FOREIGNERS ARE TALKING ABOUT YOU!!!!

I went to the shop the other day...

10 lambert + packs of rizzla (they were both for separate people, I don't even smoke at all)
they both grinned at each other and started speaking foreign.

It doesn't take a genius to realise what they were talking about

Foreign Lover!!! What's wrong with chips!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Foreign lover! They aren't British!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_fries (but covers what we would call chips, just the Americans got to name the page)

It is claimed that fries originated in Belgium, and the on-going dispute between the French and Belgians about where they were invented is highly contentious, with both countries claiming ownership.

To be honest I was shocked when I brought some wine the other night asked if they took Amex (left my wallet at home) and the guy answered in what I presume to be a foreign tounge with "yeah BluD".

I think the petty part was quitting over a sign.

My mistake, had to quickly skim the story as was rushing back from lunch, if they were talking among themselves in a language then by all means feel free to do so.
