Basics:
Tegra 4 A15 Quad Core Processor
2Gb RAM
16 or 32Gb Storage + microSD slot
2560*1600 10.1" IPS display
£349.99

Top end spec sheet, seemingly pretty much stock Android, decent price tag, possible keyboard dock and not a wholly offensive design. Not too bad.

Looks good to me, and I'm considering picking one up (would wait for the next Asus transformer as the specs are nigh on identical and I prefer the Asus keyboard to the Toshiba one but it doesn't come out until q3). Not sure if they're releasing the keyboard dock as I can't find anything about it but other than that it looks good. Not sure other than the lighter/slimmer/whateverproof chassis and Sony apps if there's anything to go for the Xperia Z over this any more? I was gonna go for the Sony but not sure how that stacks up against these new ones?

Also not sure if anyone knows where I can get the keyboard dock or if they've confirmed its release? If it's not coming I'll probably wait until the Transformer comes out as they've proven to be pretty sweet bits of kit.

(I'd rather have one with a dock as I've been considering a Chromebook at uni as my desktop can't really come to lectures with me etc. but a decent tablet and dock would fill that role as well as the high end tablet that I pretty much need anyway).

Random aside: Anybody else notice the 420 oh-so-edgy easter egg in all the press images of April 20th, 4:20pm

im just not sure man..

About what?

The only real thing that could ruin this is awful build quality, which I doubt it has at that sort of weight. Unless Tegra 4 is awful (I'm just assuming it's a step up?) I'll wait for reviews before buying but it looks promising to me? I don't mind weight and if anything surely the weight suggests decent build quality?

I had a Toshiba Excite Pure (the model down from this) with the Keyboard dock as a trial unit. Keyboard worked quite well, and it is coming to the UK although its in limited supply until October from what I've been told.

That's fine by me as I only need it as a tablet until I go to uni. I'll still wait for reviews to come in just in case there's some hideous flaw I'm missing, but given it's cheaper than the Xperia Z and outspecs it or matches it across the board I'm quite sold

Loving the fact that it has more pixels than my monitor that is almost 3 times the size!

If they could do that with a SAMOLED+ screen I would be sold.

Nexus 10 Has that Res.

Yes but there are loads of issues with that display, aren't there (dodgy, faded colours, questionable brightness etc.)? Plus the Samsung devices, even the Nexus ones, are never made that well and a dual core chip scared me off given the resolution.

The A15's in the Nexus 10 is still faster then most things on the market. There was some issues around the screen but the one my GF got it amazing. The tablet its self is easily the fastest thing I have used in a long time. Faster then the iPad 3 she had before, faster then my Nexus 4. Don't be put off by it being dual core.

Build is quiet good I feel, its also nice and light and has dual front facing speakers. Hopefully an updated versions comes out soon.

Lol, yeah please don't fall for the "OMG! QUAD CORE!" marketing/hype :p No idea what the tegra 4 chipset is like, but if it anything like tegra 3, I would avoid it like the plague!

Android & apps still don't utilise quad let alone a good dual core chipset properly and knowing how slow it has taken developers etc. to update to google UI guidelines, it will still be a long way of till apps utilise quad to its full potential (tools have only been recently released at google's last i/o event to allow developers to code better/properly for multi-core CPUs)

that is the only reason these companies are using quad, purely marketing/advertising. The iphones and windows phones are just as fast/smooth yet there hardware doesn't look as good on paper...

All about software optimisation these days.

A good dual core chipset can perform better overall compared to the majority of quad core chipsets i.e. the S4 dual krait chipset compared to tegra 3 and the exynos used in the GS 3 (more performance per core is more important, then you have the other things like, more power efficient, doesn't run as hot etc.)

edit:

also being heavier does not automatically mean good build quality..... :p

It could still be put together awfully.

And vice versa just because something is light doesn't mean that it has poor build/perceived quality i.e. the iphone 5 (112g) and htc one s (119g)

I'd be concerned that it's going to feel cheap as the specs only mention a silver finish, so that probably means a spongy plastic back.

Yeah I'm tempted to go with the Xperia now but can't find it under £400 which is a shame given the specs are starting to get a little long in the tooth.

As for Tegra 3, don't people still parrot on about how great the Nexus 7 is? The few Benchmarks I've seen have put Tegra 4 ahead of the 800 chips, albeit at a supposed cost premium (but then this Tegra 4 tablet is clearly cheaper than a lot of high end Android devices).

I'm avoiding the Nexus 10 as I need microSD expansion for films/tv, and from what I hear Play content in the UK is still lacking a little bit. I'd rather carry around a few 64Gb SD cards in the case and hotswap those than have to spend 5 hours swapping content around to go on holiday.

Just had a look at the Pro in Curry's.

The display is pretty dim even at max setting, which was disappointing. Built quality seems ok if a little plasticky - in a bad way that is. Still for £349 what do you expect.

It was a little laggy to be honest. Going from an app to the home screen wasn't smooth, but that may have just been chrome.

I was hoping to try the harman kardon speakers but the wifi connection in the store was so poor I couldn't stream you tube at all.

There are some user reviews on Amazon USA. Many people are saying it gets crazy hot after 15 minutes of heavy usage.

I think I'll pass.

The rule is to buy a popular tablet, that way you have a dev community to fall back on.

This tab will be dead in the water.

Toshiba is not renound for any unique features either.

Exactly.

Get a good dev community cooking for a product and it can extend the life by a couple of years. My Nexus S is still going strong.

Can't see this happening to the Toshiba Pro.

Anyone actually get one of these? They have massively dropped in price, I picked one up tonight from a well known store for £199 with £30 cash back on that.

Also another £10 off a £100 or higher spend there if you're an O2 customer and use Priority Moments so potentially £40 off.
