PC keeps randomly resetting

Hi Guys,

My system specs:

intel i5 2500K @ 4.5GHz
12GB DDR3 1600 RAM
AMD Radeon R9 290 preflashed to 290X (By OCUK so it is under warranty)
Crucial M4 250GB SSD
Antec High current gamer 620W PSU,

The symptoms of my issue are random resets which have only occured since getting the new card about 2 weeks ago. I have also experience the "Black screen crash" which also seems to plague these new AMD cards. The odd thing is that before today, it only did this once or twice, but today it seems to have done out 8+ times.

The only thing ive been doing differently today was playing metro last light to test the new card. It has reset itself while playing the game, while running the built in bench mark, after quitting the game and also at least twice while idle (heck its even done it while ive been trying to make this post). I have tried running my CPU at stock settings and the problem persists so I know its not that. bassically the only other thing thats changed in my system is the GPU. Could it be that my power supply isnt good enough? I know that it requires 750W but on a power meter my system is only pulling around 300W so it isnt the wattage.

Could it be related to the black screen crash issue? Im running the 13.11 9.2 beta drivers at the mo, and have also tried the 9.4 version. Is there a way I might at least force some kind of error message before it resets itself? at least then id have a better idea of whats causing it because right now Im clueless, although almost everything points to the new card.

Any ideas?

Motherboard is ASUS p8P67, with latest bios. The firmware on the SSD was the latest when I installed it back in may. Dont know if its been updated since but I was under the impression you cant update them after you begin to use them?

yeah you can update them without losing any data

if its older fw theres a 5400 hour freeze bug that's fixed with newer fw,to check download ssdlife and look to see the hours use the drives at and the fw version

it could be something else but worth checking

is 040h the latest version? if not id update it anyway then take things from there

other things to look at are memory voltage and vccio/vccsa voltages

if you've flashed the firmware recently it will reset the work hours,so 100 hours since 040h being flashed

Having just visited the amd forums, I'd suggest going back to the 9.1 beta or even the 13.9 whql drivers, especially as it's a reflashed card. Seems a few have the same problem as you.

I had a similar problem once and it turned out i'd put too much thermal compound on my cpu and it was overheating but as the only difference is the new graphics card.... probably not that

Try reseating the CPU and the Ram. I had similar problems with a new card. I read that the Ram can get confused? I didn't buy it, but eventually ran out of options and tried reseating things. Cleared it up and not had a crash since (touch wood).

There is a good chance that this might have been something as simple as a slightly loose cable in my, as I messed around with them last night and it hasnt done it since (touch wood), however in the event it does happen again:

My CPU temperatures are fine as I have run prime95 for several hours and the cores reached 60-75C tops, and this was when I had it OCd to 4.5Ghz.

I havent tried reseating any RAM or anything which I could do. Its a shame my massive cooler blocks the ram in a bit though.

As for the PSU it would make sense I guess, but would 48A on the 12V rail be enough for the card Im using? as ive said the reset also happened when the system was idle and not under load.

Like I said though, hopefully it was just something as stupid as a loose cable as far as the resets were concerned.

I AM however still getting the annoying Black Screen crash! Im fairly sure (not 100% of course) that this is an AMD driver issue as lots of others are experiencing the same problem as me. The difference with this and the resetting is that the black screens seem to only happen under load whereas the reset seemed to happen at any time. I may try rolling back my driver further still and see how it affects it

I didn't have any more issues last night with resetting so hopefully that's okay... Could the black screen crash be psu related? I assumed it was amd drivers as alto of others are reporting the same issues. They said the 9.4 beta driver might have solved it but it hasn't for me at least

12g Ram is a pretty strange amount.

Do you have 2x4 and 2x2 sticks in? or is it 3x4 tripple channel.

If the first then try taking the 2x2 out
