£150 GPU

Think the HIS R9 270x is around £155 on OcUK. Decent card for that money.

Edit - nvm must have been on sale yesterday. At £161 you get a 270X & BF4 free. Still a cracking deal.

The 270 is a bit of a strange one when it's so close to the 270X but the power is a bit crippled. Unless you're on a mega tight budget or must have a card with a lower TDP, I would prefer to pay a little bit more for a 270X, which is probably less likely to throttle.

The only difference between the X and none X is clocks, they're both 7870's.

AMD have given the 270 just one 6 Pin PCI-E input so it can have a 150w TDP like a 7850. Some 270s that I've seen have a lower power limit you can set in the CCC and the OC you can use is limited as well. You can just push all the sliders to the right and it ends up at around 1050Mhz like a 270X. It seems you can push past this in afterburner though, but if you really want to OC, the 270X makes more sense.

I must be missing something, why is the R9 270 crippled?

It has a cracking cooler, BF4 and it'll overclock, there's no difference in shaders/spec, just the clocks.

I haven't seen any reviews for the Gigabyte card, but the 270 reviews say that there's a low power limit and so only 1x6 pin is needed. It could be a reference design thing.

Probably a reference design thing I assume.

In the same way 6850's had both 2 and 1 6 pin designs.

Yes it's a bit confusing, the XFX 270A also says 1024 Stream Processors in the specs on their website but some companies selling it list it with 1280, others 1024.
