It's always going to be contentious - apartheid was clearly something that needed to challenged but was it right and just to do so by inciting mass murder, terrorism and even torture? Some will say no, others will say yes.

It's interesting how we consider these actions as different to an actual state on state war... His movement fought a war against another movement - and won so he's the hero.

Churchill fought against Hitler and won - he's the hero.

You don't get to be a hero in these situations without getting a lot of blood on your hands, it's just history tends to look far more favourably on the heroes.

The best thing is most of those praising him are probably doing so off the back of reading the papers without any real knowledge of the atrocities he commited.

If those of you labelling him a great man do so for Bin Laden, Adams et al as well then fair play. I highly doubt it though, hence you are hypocrites.

Adams (and the Loyalists) had the ballot box. And unpicking the rights and wrongs of Ireland in the wake of he 1922 settlement does not compare to a fascist state depriving the most basic human liberties from the majority of its citizens on the basis of the colour of their skin.

Mandela is closer to Churchill. Civilian deaths justified by the greater goal of defeating tyranny.

When you are in power it's anything you want it to be. Someone takes a stand against your tyranny? then they are instantly "terrorists"

Yet if those same people overthrow a brutal dictator they are "revolutionaries"

Of course it also matters if they are black or white. If whites rebel it's generally seen as a good thing, but not the same for blacks?

If you want mass murder take a look at what the USA & UK have been doing for the last few hundred years.

We all have skeletons in our closet and you need not look further than Northern Ireland to see how convicted terrorists and killers come to the political foy for, you would hope, the greater good.

Perhaps it takes to live under the brutality of Apartheid to truly understand why o e would take lives for your cause.

It's an incredibly difficult thing to picks sides here. I guess it depends on how much you believe that the ends justifies the means. Just think of how many innocent German people died in the bombing during World War 2 but the likes of Churchill are generally considered heroes.

That I will grant you is in his favour.

However apologies don't make up for past wrongs, especially when he didn't actually apologise. In fact his lack of an apology implies that he found his actions acceptable.

He served a 27 year sentence and was lucky not to recive death penalty. At least at the end he preached a better line.
