My Facebook account was supposedly hacked and facebook are saying they have locked it and are asking for photo id..Passport, driving licence to recover it.

Is this genuine? and has anyone provided such id before to unlock an account?

Is it definately even locked, if "they" notified you by email it could be a phishing scam and phoney links.

Facebook contacted me via e-mail.

When I go to Facebook site I try and log in it says my account is locked and to try and log in via Windows 7 & Chrome (Which is what I am doing) or the other option is to provide 'Government photo ID'..

Did you even check the sender's address and most importantly, did you Google it?

Edit*
Seen post just above now.

Are you certain you went to the real facebook site and not a fake one via a link on the email you received?

I had a virus ages ago that "locked" facebook and asked for ID and bank details to confirm i am who i am.

It was a phishing browser plugin that got on my pc via a backdoor java insertion. Nip on the facebook website on your phone or another pc and if it works then confirmed your infected :)

Don't see why FB would be asking for photo ID since even with sensitive websites, they ask for you to confirm security questions. You obviously didnt use photoID when you registered.
