Have you tried booting into safe mode?

Try unplugging the HDMI from the console then power it up and then off. Re-connect the HDMI and see what happens.

Think when you login there will be a few bars that appear to tell the charge.
The console tells you when you are about to run out though.
The amber light on the controller stops pulsing when it is fully charged.
