Uruguay becomes first nation to legalise marijuana trade

I'm puzzled by this argument that cannabis will become more expensive if it's legalised. My understanding is it already has an inflated price because it's only available on the black market and it's risky for dealers to handle. If it's legalised, I don't see how the price could do anything but fall, even if the government does put a sin tax on it.

What if it's still detectable in your blood, without having an effect?

Residual from alcohol consumption can still be detected for a time after alcohol itself is no longer present in the bloodstream.

Well that's the problem, such drug testing is a blunt instrument that wrongly labels people with trace amounts of the drug in their body (which has been demonstrated to have no effect on performance), as being under the influence.

Correct, in Amsterdam it is far cheaper to buy than the black market here:)

Smoking dope will make you dopey, don't be a dope head. It might mutate your cerebral cortex, most mutations are harmful.

How long it stays in your system, It can be tested in your nails for a much longer period if I recall correctly.

The amount of people that smoke this stuff is unreal, I deliver to lots of houses and I would sayin the evening about 75% of the houses I go to smell of it. I'm not talking about just estates full of dole dossers either.....I've been to some stunning houses with porsche's, GTR's and the like sat on the drive and they are smokers too.

There are lots of reasons to legalize it and not many not to, People moved to weed from resin because of all the crap people added to it and now they are doing it to the weed, glass dust to make it look full of thc crystals, sand to add weight, the list goes on and on.

Not only could the government make a bit of cash they would save millions. On the estate across the road someone's always getting busted for growing, last time they were out my other half spoke to them and they said they were raiding a grow room everyday and thats just my area!

The health benefits in controlled production would also help save lives from people using bad ingredients, scare mongering about E's etc when it's not the drug but the crap they chuck in with it.

The thing is this can be grown at home, and once legal WILL be taxed,
So whats to stop people (gangs) growing it to avoid tax

you can brew your own booze at home(and so can gangs) untaxed and cheap but not all that many people do it even when said tax keeps rising

similar with cigs. most smokers know where they can get some dodgy tax free cigs rolled by illegal imigrants (probably) or some second rate tobacco in fake pouches. but its a small percentage who buy that stuff too

The stuff should be banned just because it stinks. If it became legal to trade it or grow it I'd hate to live next door to a grower the smell is nauseous.

Well as long as it doesn't put anyone at risk I have no issues. I would still prefer to be in an environment free of drug users. But that's my personal stigma I have attached to drugs. I'm sure in general it causes less issues than is reported in a sensationalist way.

However if it affects you and isn't detectable then that should still be something to consider.

massive reduction in money going to criminal gangs?

reduced difficulty in conducting testing/research on it which harmful/positive effects or constituents can be more readily identified rather than the frankly laughable guesswork and hearsay that they both are now?

less stupid young kids throwing the potential for brilliant futures away by getting a criminal record for something so trivial.

huge reductions in policing and legal expenses prosecuting and investigating the trivial end users

Amusingly a bloke down my old road had his house catch fire - he'd rigged every room with massive growing equipment and there had been a short. He was an ex-special in the police and before that an electrician.

If it doesn't, and it doesn't appear in your blood (which it wouldn't do if it's been digested and fully broken down by your body, just like alcohol disappears) then there's no problem - if there are trace elements in your body then I'm afraid it could still be having an impact / effect on your acuity/state of mind/judgement.

most drug tests test for metabolites not the actual drug. the tiny amount of the drug used compared to the amount of alcohol used makes it incredibly difficult to detect the actual substance in time.

surely that would come under the standard environmental health laws? which could be used to easily limit city/suburban growing.
