Ethical job dilemma

So what about high street banks and their overdraft policies then?

There are more morally bankrupt organisations to get worked up about. I can't see future employers being put off by you doing DBA work at a payday lender, they will be more interested in what you did while you were there.

Pinning "immorality" on payday lenders is simply a distraction from the real immorality of a society in which people are left so poor and ill-equipped (in a life-skills sense) that they have no choice but to use such services.

Basically, the lenders are filling a hole which society creates.

No question, I would go for it. They're no different to many other types of companies out there which offer finance for whatever reason like catalogues, car dealerships and any other "buy now pay later" type business.

As people have said though, I'd be keeping an eye out for other jobs (and maybe applying) as the long term future of this industry isn't certain. But given your present situation I'd apply.

If you are fine with being a 'legal' loan shark and taking advantage of not so bright/desperate people by putting them into a perpetual cycle of debt and misery ....... then go for it.
Personally I think those companies are utter scum and should be illegal like they use to be

Well no, he's going to be a DB Analyst.

Go for it.

If you don't like it when you get there delete their SQL backups and drop their databases*

*Don't actually do this

Probably not but more because I wouldn't expect it to represent a stable environment, I think the Payday Lending market is very much a bubble which will be popped by increasing public backlash and government legislation.

That's a reasonable consideration, the govt potentially could crack down on these firms at any point. Most financial firms do screw over their clients a bit in one way or another but pay day lending firms take the mickey. The fact their clients tend to be poor people who are mathematically and financially illiterate is causing some people in power to take notice and not in a good way. Whether the activities of these firms get curbed significantly is yet to be seen but if I was planning on spending at least a couple of years in a new role I'd probably try to look at other options.

Whilst I don't like the companies I wouldn't look down on anybody who worked for them. Jobs are pretty scarce, go for it.

I would go for it. You're not the one persuading a certain demographic into getting a payday loan, you're just doing... Well i have no idea what you'd be doing but not that! If you didn't, it would just be someone else.

Maybe take this job as insurance / temporary and keep looking?

I'd take the job and work to my best - whilst still keeping my ears out for other jobs.

EVERY job has it's ethical questioning, it's just that Pay Day Loan is currently hot potatoes for people to point and blame. Banking sector is slowly recovering from the last lashing by the mob.

Food sector is constantly bombarded by regulators and tabloid opinions on how much salt, sugar, fat and E numbers should a processed food contain, whilst still expecting shelf life of forever and taste like it's home-made (which ironically, often contains more of the mentioned raw materials).

Feeding the family is more important than an ethical debate, unless we're talking career in crime - that'd be a different topic. Good luck in your interview!

I work for a payday lender and had the same sort of ethical debate with myself.

It doesn't take long to realize that everyone who works there is just a normal person, they aren't the dregs of society hell bent on stealing peoples money like the papers will have you believe.

The press/politicians are having a field day at the moment, but don't let that get in the way of you looking after yourself/family :)
