Do you think we would be twice as advanced as we are now?

As an example, It's took about 113 years from the first aeroplane to what we have now. If we didn't ever sleep, do you think we would be travelling at a much faster speed than the current fastest. Twice as fast?

Also, do you think the worlds fattest man would be twice as heavy. Would evolution even allow such a thing?

Dunno. Current evidence, as provided by you OP, would suggest we would be at least twice as dumb. Go to bed.

Don't sleep for a month then try explaining what an aeroplane is, never mind inventing one!

If we didn't sleep we would not need drugs as you start to see some pretty weird **** after not sleeping for 2-3 nights. Or sleeping an hour each night. Try it.

Or join the forces and I suppose you get to do it for free.

Russian sleep experiment (can't verify how real that is).

Sleep is so critical to our brain function that we wouldn't be achieving any more.

Infact we'd be going in the opposite direction. I for one without sleep can't do anything, even basic things such as structuring a sentence. I've been up for 16 hours and struggling with this.

I'm not sure if the OP was saying 'what if humans didn't have the requirement for sleep' - IE could function perfectly well with no sleep at all. Thats how I took it anyway

there was a guy who couldnt sleep let me try to google him
Must be this guy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Herpin

Could be BS though as he claimed he never slept for 94 years where as most people who develop it die within 18 months http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatal_familial_insomnia

another guy 33 years without sleep

and another shot in the head and never slept after
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Kern
he claims 40 years without sleep

The brain gets cleared of toxins when we sleep according to what I once read
