mavity (2013)

I find it hysterica when a film does well, that some people who don't enjoy it feel it's their duty to balance some imaginary "opinion scales" by being rediculously/unfairly negative about it.

We see it over and over (eg: Titanic, Avatar) with people suffering seemingly from a complete loss of all reason and fairness, drop into some bizarre binary black and white opinion where the film is either great or "a sack of ****" or "worse film of the year".

When performing such a binary opinion, they'll ignore any and all aspects of the film they actually resonated with or that showed good film making in their attempt to balance the scales, and generally not even give any reason at all why they didn't enjoy it. They'll certinaly not be able to give a solid critique why it merits their diatribe.

In short, if you don't enjoy a big block buster film such as this, no problem; People have different likes, dislike and expectations. But to charge into a film that's clearly pretty well made and has some interesting and innovate production, and declare it as the worse thing ever put to film just - frankly - makes you look irrational and unable to contruct a fair reasoned opinion.

You didn't enjoy it? Fine... Worse film ever? Of course not... Stop trying to "balance the opinion scales".

ps: Before these aforementioned type of people start taking offence and trolling me (I'll get called a fan boy or something I suspect), I certainly didn't think the film was brilliant, but enjoyed many aspects of it, even if there were a couple of annoying flaws. Great? No. Enjoyable? Yes. Worse film ever? Don't be ridiculous!

The visuals were nice but there's got to be more to a film than this surely?

I put this in the "What did you watch last night" thread :

Battleship had more to commend it on the acting stakes and the same people in charge of that navy seemingly wrote the script for this and decided that Bullock would be an ideal candidate to put into space.

Through a series of miraculous events she not only manages to alter a few of Newton's laws, find a space suit with an inexhaustible air supply and gain full working knowledge of the mind boggling intricacies of three different space stations on the fly, but also wrestle herself free from being a suicidally bereaved mum and find the strength and the luck of the gods to make a perfect splash-down landing in a Chinese space capsule not 10 yards from a beautiful sandy beach.

I've seen some American feel good and happy ending tripe in my time but this one not only takes the biscuit, but the factory and the whole production facility with it.

And there was I thinking this might be another "Moon" :(

I can turn my brain off occasionally and enjoy a film that has some very big flaws but at a bare minimum it's got to have an okay script and be reasonably well acted for me. This had neither.

Worst film ever - of course not. I'd still put it in the bottom 10% of the few thousand films I've seen in the last 40+ years however.

^^ Maybe put a "** SPOILER **" warning above that, or use [noparse]

tags for good netiquette? You jump from general opinions to absolute spoilers in the space of one sentence...

Yep, the film was very contrived and there were some strangely odd moments of needless departures from scientific truths, but I still enjoyed it... But I can understand how it might grate with some people too much. And yes, the "mum" aspect of it felt clunky!

EDIT: Thanks for SPOILER tagging it ;)

Sandra Bullock does space - why oh why didn't I see the complete load of tripe coming prior to paying to watch this. Even the missus wanted to go half way through :(

So you didn't know she was in it before you went the cinema?

Looks like you and the missus are about as intelligent as *********! lol

Match made in heaven:p

At least you both have the Hobbit :D

.

Yes, And mavity does this. But it requires some level of intelligence to see through it and find the greater meaning.

I am so glad I am not you...

A cow in a field is happy just chomping on grass...

I agree, Bans should be in place for noobs who want to offer an opinion..and don't use spolier tags...Most don't, most just rant and have nothing concrete to back up their claims other than "Its crap"

You know who you are

Edit - I've put part of my post in spoiler tags now to keep others happy.

The point was that it was typical Bullock, not the one that found some semblance of acting ability in "The Bind Side" for example.

You're getting personal over a film, really? Step back, take a pill and then come back with a well constructed statement regarding this so called "greater meaning"...

The mum thing was silly, but I guess they wanted her to have some redemption at some point in the film, rather than it just being triumph over extreme adversity. Fairly standard tropey stuff, really.

I would argue it was not typical Bullock....And I was the one kicking off at the start of this very thread about it being bullock in the lead role :p

Guess what? Having seen the film, I changed my mind..It was clearly not standard Bullock stuff...The androgyny and the performance was not typical bullock from a mile off.

So you didn't get the bigger picture then and what the flim was actually trying to say? You didn't get the reference to
not telling :p
right at the end?

You just saw the beach on face value...not from a connotative POV

I'm so glad I have a brain! lol:D

You lot who **** this movie off don't deserve to know these answers quite frankly.

Just in case I missed a trick here I took a quick read of a few of the broadsheet's reviews of this. Sure enough none of them mention anything other than the existentialism (which I though was too big a word for you), the sensory experience and the nods to A Space Odyssey, Dark Star and the likes. Well err yes, we hopefully all got all of that - it was all about as subtle as a brick in the face lol. But I'm glad you personally found something that none of them did - what review site did you get your opinion from again?

As to Bullock, I can't say I looked that far into her performance at all - I usually turn the TV over if she ever appears on it, but her acting in this didn't disappoint as it had the usual transparency and lack of talent. Are you sure you weren't watching Miss Congeniality while tripping?

Get mad all you like (although why it should bother someone on a higher plane to everyone else is beyond me), but we're still waiting on this greater meaning, so you best go and have another search for it...

I saw this at the IMAX at Waterloo, never been there before. Freaking massive screen, biggest in UK

Far and away one of the best cinematic experienced I have ever had, the movie was brilliant as was the screen.

Bullock has had some rare good turns as an actress. Crash and The Blindside come to mind. Yes, most of her work isn't up to much, but some of it is good and guess what, that includes her role in mavity.

Great movie , was not expecting it to be as good as it was , the 3D worked very well .
Although 3/4 way through i was thinking WTF.
the bit where Clooney opens the hatch to get in the capsule

Blindside is very moving, I need to watch it again actually as I saw it on initial release only.

Anyhow, now that you've all seen mavity, check this out.

I saw it in 3d and really enjoyed it. Just loved the scenery and little touches. The story wasn't ground breaking but it kept my attention. Although I found it hard to take sandra bullocks character seriously as she was called Ryan and that's a boys name..
