Too high of a screen res?

All indications point to a lack of vram as lowering the vram usage solves the problem. Not interested getting into another vram debate over it, just my and more importantly his opinion having now used a 690 at this res.

So the reviews and those links you keep posting are all wrong.

I don't really want to run back into AMD.

Is it possible to grab a 760, Would it work and provide more grunt or would I need another 770?

You'd need another 770 if you wanted to SLI as you can't mix and match.

Eh? If you mean the Guru3D/Bit tech links they're from single player. Single player uses much less vram vs Multi player. Sweclockers benched Multiplayer 64 man and noted the same thing as what i saw. Its a shame they only benched 6 minutes of multi player as well as it seems to be more pronounced the longer you play and the drops don't always happen immediately.

When the resolution is screwed up also increases the demand on the graphics memory drastically. Once again, you can make do with 2GB of video memory in the three lower levels, but at the "Ultra" it simply becomes too much and use tops out at about 2.5GB. This is also evident in our performance charts, where cards with only 2 GB of graphics memory at times go on serious performance losses with resolution and detail on top.

I've seen it with my own eyes and i agree with their conclusion. You're welcome to disagree with that, but having seen it myself i agree with it. The fact they show the same behaviour with Nvidia and AMD 2gb cards can safely remove any claim of bias from the debate as well.

On a single card such as that hitting a vram limit in BF4 at 1440p would take you to sub 10fps at a guess. With 3 780tis when I hit my VRAM limit with Shadow Play I was getting low 20s.

I'll be looking at getting another 770.

It's a shame that my card is insanely rare, I'll just have to get a different colour and style.

Lowering AA is lowering the bandwidth requirement was my point. As Kaap isn't struggling for VRAM as well with 4 680 cores.

The averages are fine, albeit a fair bit lower than my 7990 so thats why i don't believe the reason for the random fps drops is a 256bit bus/memory bandwidth issue.

I'm getting out now cos im bored to death of these damn vram debates. I've said my piece.

@Techen

Just get another 770 SLI. At the very least you'll be able to play 1440P Ultra Preset with AA off. Maybe even with AA @x2 or @x4 depending on who you believe. I can only speak for what i saw when i tried it on a 2gb card. It might be ok for you. :)

Sounds like a setup problem.

Sounds like PEBKAC or memory bandwidth. Wouldn't be surprising at 1440p.

Agreed.

For me, your friend is doing something wrong, as I was playing BF4 at 1440P on a 6970 (2GB) and whilst the frames were rubbish (~33), it never dropped into single numbers or gave the slideshow effect of what running out of VRAM previously did for me.

He needs to look at his system. Maybe CPU? Maybe a virus? Memory?

BTW, I ran it at full ultra and 64 man MP, just to see if it could cope and it did. Thankfully, MilanoChris's Titan is now sitting comfortably in my computer (thanks Chris) and I don't have to feel dirty again :D

BF4 player here Just chipping in to say there is a setting on BF4 called resolution scale. IF you have that set to say 150% and your playing at 1080p res that essentially makes the game render @ 1440p and down-scale to your native resolution giving crisper textures. Then you goto 1440p screen and leave that set at 150% you will then be at 1440p native res + 1.5x as many pixels. So its either 1080p + resolution scale above 100% or 1440p and scale set at 100%.

check on this before you do anything OP

Thanks Matt, Remember. I tried playing BF4 on a 280x with 3GB on the card and I have the same FPS drop as the GTX 770 card.

I play 1440p with the scale at 100% all the time, I can only go to high settings if I want a stable 60fps.

Well let us know how it goes either way. Neither card has the grunt for 1440P Ultra preset thats for sure. You'll need two of either to push enough frames to get playable fps.
