M&S have dropped a clanger

I could perhaps understand more if they refused to work on the meat counter and handle raw pork. That sort of makes sense.

Not wanting to handle a plastic container that just happens to have pork in it is just using your own religion to be an awkward ****.

Top comment on the telegraph sums it up really.

Here in Morocco, supermarket staff, almost all of whom are Muslims, sell alcohol and pork products. As they are packaged so they don't come into direct contact with the product, they have no problem handling them. They would never think of embarrassing a customer simply because they do not eat or drink the product being purchased. If a Muslim country can do this, I am struggling to understand why M&S is creating a distinction that is ultimately divisive, and it should not be encouraged in a liberal society.

I would be right ****** off if I got to the front of the queue and was asked to join another due to the contents of my trolley. In fact I would be livid and demand to see the manage and putting in a complaint to the head office. I do shop there a lot for food and would find it unacceptable.

This will get interesting very fast. It'll be a matter of time before non Muslims refuse to serve Muslims elsewhere and there will be absolute hell up.

Unless it's a product that carries an age restriction everyone should be allowed to buy whatever they want wherever they shop.

Edit: Share price tomorrow will be amusing :o

Thousands of Muslims working in supermarkets with no problem - ignore
A few Muslims at most - respectfully - decline to serve pork/alcohol to customers - up in arms!

A non-issue since policies also exist to cover people from other religions. Technically there's no problem for Muslim staff to scan the goods through, although alcohol presents a bigger issue than pork.

Another small step along the road to islamification of this country.

When will people say enough's enough?

A person in a shop says they can't do something, gets another member of staff who can, and you think this is islamification? How do you work that one out?

Which they can. This story doesn't contain any incident of someone 'not being allowed to buy something'.

I can't cope with this level of stupid. I'm going back to my dramaless, and rather pleasant M&S-bought-bacon-filled life.

I do the majority my food shipping at M&S and never have I been refused to be served by a Muslim or Jewish (and although how would you know they were either unless explicitly told, I am pretty sure that I have at some point been served by one or the other or both) checkout person.

In fact I have always received exemplary service and exemplary products and will continue to shop there until or if that changes. A story in a tabloid isn't going to influence how I shop tbh.

Why is this any different to a Christian Doctor refusing to give an abortion or a christian pharmacist refusing to give the morning after pill? Oh, that's right, it isn't. If they refuse to serve you, you have the right to go somewhere else to get your products. How about you exercise that right rather than running to the internet to cry harder about it?

That staff will just decline to sell it and another staff will make the transaction - Seems simple enough?

in an ideal world maybe. but are there really going to be staff around who can help immediately? if people have to wait, they'll kick up a fuss or walk out and i wouldn't blame them at all.

M&S should cater for these staff by finding them something else to do. it's not something a customer should ever be exposed to.

I'm confused.

I understood the objection to be to consuming such products. Not handling them.

So I'd have to gather up all my shopping back into my trolley and move checkouts? Erm no thanks they can bring another member of staff over to serve me instead, or I'll shop elsewhere.

That is fine but you completely ignored the crux of the story. ;)
