Virgin Media Discussion Thread

WTF! are VM doing, my original fault was fixed yesterday (apparently) leaving my with a very slow/ no connection and now the original fault doesn't look to be fixed, max speed now 15Mb. Last night graph  ... back on the phone i guess.

@mrk which SH did you get mate?

This was my speed test

I'm still trundling along on one of these modems and through my own wndr3700 router

from the wired connection through the router, this is my test from a few minutes ago

Havent tested the wifi lately, but if there is an issue there, then it is my issue to deal with as the router/access point is mine not theirs.

So right now, i see little or no reason to want to change it, i havent rebooted it in a while and with the exception of some noticable slowdowns on youtube which everyone is seeing for whatever reason (although i suspect packet sniffing and limiting - must remember to test on vpn next time).... i have little reason to complain about it/connection, i certainly don't seem to be suffering anything half as bad as what you guys are reporting, and in fact, nothing bad enough for me to have set up one of those monitors.

I have to admit, not overly happy with the £4.25 price hike, as i still can't tell fro their crappy bill layout exactly whats gone up, in a time when BB competition is supposed to be giving better prices/value (i have no idea how my original 12yr unused bt line would cope so dare not switch right now!)

They still don't like the fact i have 2 phone lines, the broadband a couple of retentions discounts but NO tv, but have at least stopped calling to bug me about the tv

Oooh guess what just got delivered, SuperHub v2 :D

Edit*

The guy on the phone seemed to think the blue tick LED would turn green when the line was activated... it's only a blue LED and the only green one is the up/down status LED that turns blue once active... Oh well. He also cut the phone call off randomly, my phone had full reception and I used an 0800 wizard app that routed via a local number so the call didn't cost me anything thankfully since I was on the line for 34 minutes...

Line seems to be running good, speeds are good too. Will monitor latency over the next few days and power levels are lower now too (still have the 10dB attenuator the engineer installed):

going to be looking elsewhere in the new year as the service on this connection is just rubbish, last one the engy didn't even turn up , because according to the "customer service" he'd checked the box of the road and a connection was a little loose so he tightened it up.

thanks for not telling me the engy wasn't turning up so i stayed in for no ****in reason you ******.

thx for that, i hadn't seen one of those before you mentioned it, grabbed me one now :) looks like a handy tool

So far so good. Apart from the spikes where I was maxing out the connection for a short while, latency is lower generally and all seems well. Let's see what happens over the next couple of weeks! The red is when the SH2 got delivered and I spent a while getting it hooked up and activated.

As far as I see now, even in modem only mode the SH2 is far better.

Frustrated at the moment with the lousy upload. Currently on 60Mb down, which only has 3Mb up. They gave me a month free trial with 120Mb, which was great, and that had 12Mb upload (although I was getting 11-12). Why is the 120Mb product 10:1 and the 60Mb product 20:1 ratio ? I'm going to have to get serious with them about moving to Sky Fibre if they can't do some sort of deal - either give me 60/6 or a cheap upgrade to 120/12.

I'm not entirely sure i ever hit the 12mb upload speed, i'll have to watch next time i upload something of reasonable size, short burts are no indication of true speed, like all these speed tests they are subject to a lot of conditions, i used to see massive fluctuations when i upgraded from 20 to 50, basically i found myself considering going back to the 20, because i had solid 20 when i wasn't capped, but the 50 at the time was all over the place and averaging lower on larger files where you could monitor it, yet of cause when i phoned them all o got was the "but speed test works fine" replies - now i know comparatively little, but i do know that the person on the other end of the "i need help" line was even less knowledgeable than myself

This country has always been terrible for balanced levels in the service, the dutch and french i think are pretty much the other way around !

I used to monitor pretty carefully what i was doing, because i was forever slamming into the capping, especially annoying on the upload side of things ! and another thing i hate, is the binding of the 2, don't kno if this is the case, but a long time ago, when downloading at full speed, i would also be registering an upload, which on more than one occasion after uploading some files, then downloading stuff, would push me over the upload cap, causing the throttling to kick in for 5 hours or what ever it was at the time !

Funny enough, whilst i've been navigating this thread and replying, response times seem to have been low, but that could just be here, ebay is running fine in the other tab i have open

either give me 60/6 or a cheap upgrade to 120/12.
That's the other thing, do any of us pay the same for the same services ?? lol, i've never seen 2 bills look the same !

What's with everyone getting free SH2s?

Any why is it that I cant get one only because the stupid cow at Virgin Media had a cataract or something?

Completely unfair. Maybe because I have an overly polite telephone manner? Next time I'm going to tell the lying cow to stop being a bitch straight up.

Whoah calm down!

Simply post your problem on the VM forum and let the techs there arrange what's needed and thus bypassing initial telephone support.

I did, no one cared and everyone tried detracting from the actual issue and no sign of anyone technical there.

What's more annoying is that the woman admitted that the SH1 is unfit for purpose by design, yet the reason she gave for me not being entitled to a working "fit for purpose" replacement is that I wouldn't benefit because I don't have any 802.11n clients (which is a downright lie and pretty infuriating) heck I even showed her the properties page of my NIC which clearly said 802.11N and she wasn't having any of it, she tried telling me Intel just put an N there when it's actually only B or G. It's as if she went into some kind of lockdown, it was like talking to a brick wall.

Persistence rather than get angry and give up?

On my thread people posted saying it was likely my router or a device connected to the line causing the issue or user error.

Nope.

Persist, show the screenshots, show the numbers and keep the thread on the top of the page so the techs see (it can take a day or two).

I got a SH2 for free without even trying. My connection's been a bit arse over the last few months, so I moaned about it a few times over the phone, a technician was sent out and he installed a SH2 for me no problem.

It didn't solve the issues, but that's a separate matter.

My nets been fine lately, getting 126mb down and 11 up. gamings been great even youtube videos seem to be loading faster (4k videos especially quick  )

Don't know how I feel about the bill going up by £5 a month just for some sport HD channels I will never watch but the internet at 150mb/s... Yes please
