Is Xmas magical anymore?

The magic is still there for the young ones but it wanes a little as you get older. It’s far more commercialized than it was before but you can choose not to be carried away by that.

We ignore that side of it and our Christmas is all about being with family and friends. Although I quite regularly have a moan it is still is something special.

Yes, Christmas is often the time where you're spending more and more on a variety of things.........oh wait you do that during the year as well :p

so translated, when you were younger you got stuff for free (good times) now that you're older you have to buy other people stuff (bad times) ;)

I'm talking about atmosphere more than anything else. But yeah, I have to buy more stuff of course.

I'm just looking forward to the time off and spending time with family/friends, whilst relaxing and having plenty of food, sweets and alcohol.

Gave up with all that mad dashing around for presents etc years ago.

This "it's much more commercialised these days" rhetoric is nonsense. It's been like that for at least 50 years. The difference is now we're older and have to pay for it we don't like it.

No, it's always been commercialised, but now it's a lot more commercialised.

More channels for media and increased tech means more commercialisation. Just as an example, you can turn to your mobile phone, go to your phone store and see a lot of Xmas crap. When in the 80s was your landline sending you Xmas adverts? And the home internet didn't even exist then and we don't need to go into why that's so massively commercial.

I think this is partly key to the issue. It's been going on like this for about 50 years now like you say, and it's just been the same thing year-in year-out for so long that it's now just a regular process we've become so used to that all the novelty has long since worn off.

We love Christmas. Daughter is so excited!

We go to mass on Christmas Day. Best part of Christmas, to celebrate the birth of our dear Lord Jesus.

Merry Christmas to everyone, even all you athiests! Lol God bless you all

Sure. For Crossmas, that magical time of the year.

I'm not religious, Xmas is nothing to do with Jusus for me. It's the mid winter holiday where I spend time with my family, celebrated by many people before Christianity even existed. Mid winter holiday is a bit of a mouthful, so what is wrong with saying Xmas? Futurama a do it...

If you're going to look at it that way, it's actually the commencement of Winter and the peak strength of the Holly King [look it up].

I'm a bit, "bah humbug" this year. I've only bought presents for my niece and nephew, I'm having a couple of people over for dinner, drinks and some films, and that's about it.

I refuse to be sucked into the ridiculous type of spending I've done in the past couple of years.

I'm not looking for the original meaning to emulate and religiously adhere to, and the Holly King is probably not the first. I'm talking about what Xmas is to me, now.

Still magical for me. It's a time when a bunch of my family members gather round, not so much because it's Christmas but more because it's my birthday. ;)
