Redbull & other energy drinks are they bad for you ??

The most interesting thing about Caffeine for me is that it can cause severe anxiety attacks in some people. Whether that's because they are responding to the physical symptoms or it has an effect on the brain really interests me. I enjoy a couple of cups a day but completely avoid energy drinks, you don't need to be an expert to know that a can of fizzy energy drink is going to contain a plethora of nasty chemicals which cannot be good for the body. My energy levels are very good and I have to have one of those large Costa coffees to really feel a buzz or witness any physical symptoms such as increased heart rate. In short drinking coffee in moderation is not dangerous.

caffeine + propranalol is a excellent combo, lots of energy and motivation but no high heart rate, or edginess.

coffee though probably contains more uncontrolled chemicals than energy drinks though, at least you know exactly whats in them you don't know fully whats in a coffee been to the molecule or more importantly whats sprayed on them, or baked onto them.

unless you wash it first which i don't think would work lol

They are fine, really just sugary carbonated water + some caffeine and taurine... Thing is most people who consume too much of said drinks have little consideration for other dietary requirements and nutrition etc.

They aren't a problem on their own but if you are knocking back litres of the stuff its probably likely you have other problems with regard to diet/nutrition.

pretty much. the taurine is great for cramps though.

Only time I drink redbull is when I am driving to France through the night or something.

People who drink these drinks when all they are going to do is sit in an office are pretty stupid. Water, banana and a cups of tea will get you through the day. Much healthier.

Get educated or get medicated. :)

You should take your own advice because you clearly don't know anything about caffeine, it is not neurotoxic to humans.

You see people using it all day. All buzzed up at 6am like they're on speed in a rave party. It's speed on a little lower level. It's just a socially accepted and encouraged version of amphetamine. It's a plant alkaloid, a stimulant.

Comparing caffeine to amphetamine which works in a completely different way, absolutely hilarious ignorance.

If you have to eat something in moderation it's bad for you. You might as well say take this poison but only small doses or you'll die.
You might as well do speed in moderation if you're going to do coffee. Coffee is practically a legalized amphetamine.

Carb up and eat fruits if you want energy, get the natural sugars in! Your body will thank you and your breath won't smell like ****. :)

I can kill myself by drinking too much water, therefore it is bad for me?

Okay mate.

I could take a caffeine pill but I guess its a strange mental thing for me to actually take pill considering I am use to drinking an elixir of chemicals and sugar... lol. I will look up on perhaps taking the caffeine pill and also the D-ribose seems promising considering it helps cells to covert ATP quicker.

While it's clear that he knows less than nothing about caffeine, he is right on that point. Caffeine is a neurotoxin to humans (and very many other animals). If you drank 60 pints of strong coffee within a couple of hours without urinating, you would probably die from caffeine poisoning. It is a neurotoxin, strictly speaking, but it's not dangerous to humans because of the dose required for any serious harmful effect. You could overdose with caffeine tablets (but it would be very difficult - the LD50 for an average adult human would be in the region of 250 tablets) or if you somehow managed to obtain pure caffeine (LD50 for an average adult human would be about a teaspoon).

I think the moment he compared having a coffee to taking speed was the moment that full retard was achieved.

Was that before or after he said that the active ingredient in both caffeine and cocaine is theobromine and that caffeine is therefore the same as cocaine? QED!

Is there a category beyond "full retard"?

I'm going to take cocaine and amphetimine and get a nutter angry enough to hold a gun to my head and threaten to kill me.

No, wait. I'm going to have a cup of coffee. It's very easy to confuse the two, as they're so remarkably similar.

I blame Web 2.0, tabloids (Daily Fail) and bloggers. These elements spark so many urban myth and science misunderstanding, it's unbelievable.

And this is coming from a Pharmaceutical Science grad / practicing food scientist.

Perhaps a category for urban science myth beyond full retard:
