Thinking of doing "that trip" that gets mentioned on here very often.

Just me and my mrs, thinking of end of May/ start of June time.

We definitely want to visit Vegas, but thinking of going to do that famous drive from vegas to Los Angeles (yer I know sounds adventurous)

Please help us with the following:

1. Recommend a hotel, I will also read reviews online (we want a decent hotel)

2. How many nights/days do we need in vegas to enjoy it the most?

3. Would you recommend doing the famous drive to LA? If so how many nights there?

Thanks,

What's famous about the drive to Los Angeles? It's just a 5 hour freeway drive. The famous drive would be something like the Pacific Coast highway.

A good way to cover that freeway drive if you want it is to fly into and out of Los Angeles. The flights are quite a bit cheaper than Vegas. Then rent your car from LA.

I'm off to Vegas for the first time in April! Flying straight in to Vegas for the convenience.

I was looking at a few different hotel deals - A.ria, Vdara, Mandarin Oriental and Cosmopolitan. The latter two were a bit more expensive than the former, but did look very nice. I was close to booking a fountain view room in the Cosmopolitan but in the end realised we wouldn't be spending our time looking out of our room window that much so I saved some money and went for Vdara because it looks pretty central and nicewhilst also not being super expensive. I did show my girlfriend The Platinum, which is often recommended on here for value for money, but she didn't fancy it.

the drive IS famous, for being boring and often gridlocked at weekends :p

for a first visit and if the budget allows then a lakeview room at the Bellagio ticks all boxes

how many nights? depends if you aren't a gambler then as little as 4 could do you, I have done as many as 14 on some trips

Vdara is nice, just set back a but from the strip

I'm not much of a gambler, except I bet on the footy and play the lottery here n there :)
if that counts

I reckon I'd give black jack or roulette a good go but not poker, poker is dangerous, too risky and I'm not very great at it.

I stayed in the Vdara October 2012, was a very nice hotel. Is set back a little bit but nothing that would cause any issues.

If you play in a poker tournament it is probably one of the least risky things you can do. You pay your money up front and when you're out you're out, that way at least you know how much you are set up to lose from the out where as with blackjack or roulette you are likely to keep on going back in.

do you play much poker then?

I've played with my mates but not real money!!!! I stay out of that one :)
I'm happier betting on the footy

I downloaded an app yesterday thought try and get better at the game.

I play online poker every now and then. When I went to Vegas I played in the same game pretty much every day, think it was $50 Tournament at the Luxor. The quality of the players was probably about my level and I was comfortable with the amount of money I was in line to lose. It'd always last a few hours and was well worth the money for the entertainment.

Also we did the drive from LA to Las Vegas, wasn't all that exciting was freeways the whole way there, I did nearly drive down the wrong way on the freeway at one point which mixed it up a little. We did stop to see the world's largest thermometer and is quite exciting to see Vegas on the horizon when you are nearly there. There is also a ghost town en-route that I wanted to stop at but we decided to keep going instead. Also Zzyzx Road is on the way there too, nothing on it just a good chance for a photo.

I'd pay pretty much any premium to avoid LAX. Every time I've flown through there, something has gone wrong. The staff are terrible.

my main advice would be to avoid LA, as its dire.

Hotel wise in Vegas, we stayed in Excalibur, which was very nice! I don't think you'd go wrong staying at any of the famous hotels around there really.

We spent 2-3 nights there, was enough, but we didn't really explore to the fullest! depends what your into really!

Hotel = Mandalay.

Nights = 5 at least. Especially if you want to take a day at the Grand Canyon, which you clearly do.

If I was you, i'd be connecting to San Francisco.

That is all.

Mandalay is a nice hotel but the location is not good

It's not ideal but not too bad providing you don't mind a bit of walking. The monorail can come in handy for this as well.

I've also stayed at the Luxor, not a bad hotel but not close to being as nice as the Mandalay.

The Venetian is really nice as well, but that was considerably more expensive when I went.

+1 for San Fran - Possibly one of the best cities I've ever visited!

in before LA is rubbish.. :p

LA is ace, anyone who says otherwise did it wrong

o.p we spent many hours staring at the fountains out of our hotel window - its nuts when you are about 10 floors up and the water is shooting higher than you are
